Yeah it’s like 6.5 to 8.5 for these. Then pizza cutters. Haha

2nd/3rd Gen Tacoma, 4th/5th Gen 4Runner, FJ Cruiser all use the same rim sizes. 17x7.5, 5.25" BS, -30mm offset.

they will bolt up fine but only with stock size tires will there be no rubbing. larger diameter or width introduces at least some frame rub.

I am looking at these wrapped with 265/70/16 Goodyears. Are the 3rd gen Tacoma 16" rims 4.5" back spacing or 5.25" back spacing like the 17" rims? I have a chance to buy these at a good price but do not want to use spacers. Thanks

I have those wheels and they rub my frame at full lock. I do have bigger tires through so YMMV.

I feel like it needs at most 4.5 inches of backspacing. I was debating getting some 4runner wheels to go 17" but it didn't seem like it'll work. Really wanting to get the nitto ridge grapplers but I might just stick with my 16s and go Cooper stt max or something. I like how well the ridge grapplers perform for all conditions including trails. But I digress....

Stock tire size should not rub, even with the higher BS. It's when you move up in diameter and width when they rub

True, I have wider and taller tires. But I meant to say that you need less than 4.5" backspacing to clear the tundra calipers. I think. At least that's what the dude at wheelers helped me understand.

I'm also just trying to understand the tire geometry since I never knew there were so many different variables. If I upgrade to 17" then first I need the wheel to clear the calipers (since this is that thread). I think that was what he was asking about. Sorry if my response was confusing. I've been super exhausted from working graves. Oof.

The amount of backspacing a wheel has, has nothing to do with whether or not the big brakes will clear.

Wheel interference with the 13WL calipers is on the front facing surface of the calipers. Some wheel designs are too flat there and don't give enough room for the caliper.

I have 2017 4runner trails on my truck at the moment and they clear without a problem as well as my 16x8 te37's

Offset (back spacing) and face type (spoke design) play a factor in clearing the tundra calipers. You could have two different wheels with the same width and offset but one will work and the other will rub because the back side of the wheel faces are different. Sometimes all you need is a small slip or bolt on spacer to get away from the caliper which would change your offset and make it work

as @Digiratus and @lonelywanderer mentioned it's more about the internal design.

that being said, Toyota wheels (16" and above) will clear the Tundra calipers just fine. 17's give a little extra room, but the 2nd Gen calipers are larger than first Gen already so clearance shouldn't be a problem. 1st Gen Tacoma/Tundra wheels have more Backspace which helps to move the tire outward.

I am sure you intended to say that less backspacing translates to the wheel sitting more outboard.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was looking into some of the other specs I'd need to clear, and I'm seeing that I'll need backspacing of 4.25" or less. I think that the stock toyota wheels are 5.25"? Like the 4runner etc. Although I'd clear the brakes, I'm not sure I'd clear the UCA with the tires.

the 1st Gen Tundra 17's are 4.5 BS. there are plenty of corroded sets out there that just need TLC and paint. finding an already good set is getting harder.

Howdy folks. I was strongly considering this swap to improve the brakes, until this --- Went to hold the brakes on when removing the harmonic balancer / crankshaft bolt as part of timing belt change. The truck was on a lift. The rear wheels turned no matter how hard my helper stood on the brakes. Tightened the auto adjuster star wheels manually (I known they almost never work like they should) ... So now I can hold the crank.... But now that the timing belt is all done, the brakes are so much better, I am not going to make the Tundra swap.

just make sure not to over-tighten the rears and have them lock up when you "stand" on the brakes. this would be worse.

I have the same setup off a 2017 IIRC and they rub a tiny bit on the frame at full lock.
