Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, no passenger motor vehicle shall be operated on any way if such vehicle has the side wall or thread of any tire projecting outward beyond the outer portion of the fender or side body panel, unless such vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive or is otherwise modified and intended for off-the-way use.

I'd take a printout of the statute and tell the inspection station you are in compliance.

The second link is a google except from the 2017 Mass. Police Manual. It says the same thing and adds you can add up to 4" to the wheel track from the manufacturer stock size. I'd assume that is 2" per side. The title for this rule is 4" for 4wd

Dont have this issue in Cali- unless a LEO pulls you over. But as for our DMV, once you are registered, they just keep sending it in the mail, even if you are not the first owner.:bananadance:

At least 95% of the trucks and SUV's on the road don't have mudflaps on them. I've been driving since 1973 in a state where there are almost zero trucks with mud flaps and a large percentage of vehicles with tires WAY past the fenders. Never had an issue.

Buy some big fat ugly cheap flaps, screw them in, go get the test, then head home and switch it back to the way it was..

That looks really close. Does a 2x4 on the tire hit the fender? If so you should be good.

Roadside SMOG checks are voluntary. You don't have to consent. But there are roadside automated IR detection devices that will get you a letter to test early.

In jersey, if your vehicle is a commercial vehicle you have to have commercial plates. Not every pickup has commercial plates in jersey. It's probably on a state to state basis

I have my stock SR5 rims with 265/75/16 that shouldn't stick out at all. You can borrow those if you need them - I'm a 2nd gen but I don't think that matters. I'm in Winthrop MA.

I didn't read the rest of the thread other than the initial post. A lot of the reason why you failed isn't because you're technically out of regs for the exposed tire policy - it's because the dealership doesn't want it to come back on them when they pass you and you get grabbed by a cop. I know a few inspection stations who went super strict after this whole camera in the bays swap-over. The nazi state of Mass is now watching and their feed is live when they do inspections...

My evo hasn't passed emissions for 4 years and it will never see another one until just before I sell it later this year. It wasn't by fault of the inspector at the station it was a OBDII issue - however I wouldn't be entirely pissed if an inspector failed my truck for tinted windows, exposed tire and lack of front plate only because they're covering their ass. If for example they pass you and you get grabbed by a cop - you can snitch on them for passing you and they'll get reprimanded for it. I have shown up for a sticker at my buddy's place before literally right before they were audited - luckily I didn't pull into the inspection station instead I parked outside of it. He would have lost his ability to do stickers if they knew he was passing my evo - granted it has everything emissions and safety wise just lowered, tinted windows and altered exhaust... These auditors are in plain clothes undercover so if you have tinted windows and want to pass - show up to the gas station with the windows down if you don't know the guy.

Currently most inspection stations are all in fear for losing their license after spending however many thousands on all their new equipment/cameras that they were forced to do. This is why I stopped offering to get people stickers for them through my buddies - just way too much risk of people running their mouths to the wrong people.

I know some guys in Livingston County, their rides are made of bubble gum and bailing wire. And they still pass inspection.

Also, OP, check this thread out if no one has mentioned it yet.

I live in MASS too and I remember I had an 82 Toy and had 38s on it and they were way past my fender flares and nobody cared then. Now this state sucks with all this new inspection station bullshit. take pictures etc. I bought my truck and the guy said "I have to drive it in with this new rule" I said nobody will drive my truck. he turned his head and I drove in then he made it look like he was mad so the camera thought so as he was mumbling "whoops, I was supposed to do that" asses

Massachusetts sucks. They failed me for having a roof mounted light bar. I took it off and after going back they tried to give me a hard time over my added fuse box
