Similar event happened to me February 2017, Same area of impact. Cost of repair was 9800. Mine wasn't hit as hard tho. I would try and see if you could get diminished value from his insurance. Some states allow it. I received extra on top of the repairs done.

    Yeah.
Similar thing happened to me in my 1st gen when it was less than a year old (drunk driver at 4PM on a weekday! And I was stopped at a light). $13K+ damage, not totalled. That said, I had no frame damage, but boy did mine look a lot worse.

Like others have said, probably over $15K damage you have there, depends on your insurance but will likely be really close to totalled.

I got rear ended on the way to work one morning, car was totaled and had to fight to get his insurance to pay my medical, rental car and back wages. If I’m ever in similar straits I will be retaining an attorney.

It better be totaled. If that was my truck I would be pissed if I had to continue on in something with this kind of accident on it's CarFax, with this level of damage. You'll never get it back to factory and that would ruin the truck for me.

    None as of yet
The frame is busted up because that is the crumple zone. The tweaked section the OP showed is exactly where the frame is supposed to fold in the event of a rear end collision. the bumper is there for minor colisions, ie a shopping cart and wont stand up to much else. The trailer hitch only punched a nice hole In the others car, would have made no significant changed in damage since they were hit by someone going 60 if it wasn't there.

Hopefully the drunk drivers insurance takes care of the OP.

Ok folks, here's the skinny on truck frames these days. Most are made to be replaced in 3rds. Simply cut out the part you don't want, slide in the replacement and wild it back together.
Had a similar issue with an f150 that had similar damage. Including cab damage. Insurance paid $15k to section out the rear 3rd of the frame, replace the entire bed assembly and foo the back of the truck cab. Took 2 months and it drove just done.

Man that sucks! I'd fight to get it totaled. If they repair it, it may not ever drive the same and any trade value will be diminished down the room.

Hey Jaque, that CRIB is obsolete, you might want to share that with the manager that shared it with you.

You are correct that cold straightening is the only approved repair method, but the reason that you don’t repair them is because when they are hit in the front they typically buckle in the kick-up behind the suspension, and when they are hit in the rear they link right I front of the hitch like the OP’s

Get your wife checked out. DO NOT SETTLE with the other driver's insurance (or yours if he/she didn't have insurance) until you're ABSOLUTELY SURE your wife and child are 100% OK. Once you settle, you're done, you're not getting another dime.

I hope the truck gets worked out for you... either a new one or getting yours fixed like new.

I don't even know if that was the right one he just told me there's a CRIB covering it and thats what I found with a 5 second google search, but don't think it changes anything.

Do you have anything that says they now allow heat/sectioning/welding for frame repairs?? Because THAT would certainly change things.

Edit: nevermind you stated in your comment it doesn't change anything. So I guess I don't understand your point lol. Anyways I guess we all agree Toyota doesn't allow otherwise common in the industry frame repairs at their certified bodyshops (which was the original point)

I mean I still can't get over how awesome VOLVO is for safety, other than the Tesla Model S they have the strongest roofs in the industry, constantly at the forefront of new safety tech, hell they even invented the 3 point seatbelt and then opened the patent so the entire industry could benefit FOR FREE, therein saving thousands of lives a year. I'll always love and praise Volvo for their commitment and corporate ethics when it comes to safety.

But then I recently heard about Mercedes doing cool shit like this (pink noise):
    https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/me...pink-noise-in-the-split-second-before-impact/

So maybe you have a point :)

Doesn't look to be totaled but............ the cost of repairs plus salvage value help determine whether it totals or not........ ask the adjuster to "shop" your vehicle for the highest salvage bid....I used to do that when I was a claims adjuster...... you need to get repairs plus salvage value to be close to or above market value...glad you and family are safe..... luck

Sorry about your accident. I’ve been through this recently, with my 2017. It only had 2400 miles on the odometer. The insurance company wasn’t sure they would total it at first. In the end they did.
I told them to expect me to file a “diminished value claim”, if they chose to repair it. The adjuster seemed surprised that I knew about that. Don’t let them off the hook too easy. You’re the one who will have to take a financial hit at resale time.

Most importantly, your family is ok. Thankfully!
