Truck just back from the dealer/new frame

My neighbor just got his truck(03) back from the dealer as they replaced the frame due to rust.
On the positive side they replaced the complete frame, lower control arms, struts, rear springs, brake lines and anything connected to the frame.....
the only screw up was they put a small scratch in the bed , nor did they vacuum or wash the truck.....The struts and control arms were part of a "customer service" ......all this at no charge too...


I called my dealer(Ira , Milford, MA.) about my rusty frame on my O6, of course they said it did not have a problem and was not involved in any recall
my answered was "Yet"....

Is it cheaper to replace the frame than cut a check ????

 

cool deal though. Im sure they will include the 2nd gens soon enough.

 

its sucks. My 07 which I just bought has a lot of surface rust on the frame, more than I thought a 07 should have. I had to completely sand the frame down and primer it then paint it with rusto oleum flat black. It looks nice now, but I guess I will have to do this yearly.

How often does everyone maint thier frame? what do you use?

 

Ya know I don't have a clue, they did not offer any sort of cash incentive to him to purchase a new truck....or a used truck, he did put on his own TRD supercharger and a new HD radio and speakers....I am not sure he would want to part with them....

In reality Toyota could have solved this whole thing by double dipping the frame or coating it after it was on the truck, anything to prevent what was going to happen, no doubt there is some "memo" somewhere from a engineer requesting that someone needs to run a check on the longevity of the frames when they were shipped to Toyota.

Glad I found this thread...this past weekend while changing the oil I discovered a lot of surface rust on my 07'. Really boggles my mind as to why it would have this much rust on it. I also noticed the welds on the frame aren't the greatest. I started last night sanding and wire brushing. My plan is to paint it with rustoleum and then undercoat it. It's going to take a while. After seeing all this I checked my dad's 05' and it is way worse than mine.

 

that minimal rust is found on all vehicles with a frame....its steel it rusts. just keep up with it. everyone of my dodges had this.

 

So is it a good plan to wire brush the rust off, paint it with rustoleum, then spray it with undercoating?

 

Paint it with the rustoleum rust to steel stuff, then paint with rustoleum black.

 

how big of deal is it to just get the fram linexed? os ithat even a viable and not too terribly expensive option?

i pissed and moaned about my rusted 08 frame for a year and got no where.

 

I found the same thing on my 07. I cleaned it up with a wire wheel on my drill and a little sandpaper. Primed it, sprayed with flat black spray paint, then sprayed that with spray-on beliner. I sprayed all my frame rails with spray on bedliner.

I frequently inspect the inside of the frame and haven't noticed any rust. Fortunately I live in GA so we really don't have to deal with much rust here.

 

True, but we have the burden of RED CLAY! its the devil.

 

You call that alot ? Should have seen my frame before I painted

 

Talked with the dealer about this and they said they WOULD NOT COAT THE FRAME...it actually traps moisture in....is this true?

 

Thats the truth! Thats why I don't like to go offroading unless it hasn't rained for days because that red clay is a bitch to clean off the undercarriage. It stains EVERYTHING!
