What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Truck seems to be driving and idling fine, and a cursory inspection of hoses under the hood - I don't see anything cracked or loose.

 

Sorry dude that's not always an easy one. All it means is you're running lean to the point where your computer cannot reasonably compensate for it. You need to check for vacuum leaks after the MAF, buy a can of something flammable (starting fluid or the like) and be very careful not to catch yourself on fire while spraying around vacuum lines and joints for the intake, when the engine idles up you know you've hit the leak with your can of fluid. Listen for hissing too

This can also be caused by the MAF if it happens to be reading erroneously, the extra air it isn't metering (but is passing over it, IE not pirate air) will basically be a mystery to the comp and all it can do is add more fuel if it doesn't have sufficient evidence like improper impedance to throw a MAF code directly

It can range, could be something simple like pirate air from a broken hose, maybe an injector not keeping up with the others, leaking seal in the intake tract, bad or dirty MAF. I cannot tell you with any certainty without seeing it myself. Do you have a scan gauge or ultragauge? If so what are your Fuel Trims?

So just a rapid heads up that code is 100% coming back with trims that high. But it is affecting both banks so odds are high it is MAF or vacuum leak related.

 

Where should I be?

 

0 to 5%

 

LT trims should be around +/- 5-10% ideally.

Your dumping in 41% more fuel than normal over a long period of time.(can't remember the time used for measurement).

Definitely a vacuum leak. I wouldn't think your MAF would be bad with your mileage.

This is a wild guess and probably wrong but worth a look, you have one of those early ADD systems with the vacuum tank that basically resides in the front of the drivers front wheel well, you should make sure that is all intact.

 

Okay I will check that as soon as I stop for gas, which won't be long. Hahahaha. If it is a vacuum leak, on a 2500 mile trip is the only damage I'm doing to my wallet? If it is I'm going to keep going, if it isn't I can turn around now.

You should be fine if its not a big obvious leak.

other place to check is the back side of the intake on the driver side. Can be some connections buried back there depending on the year of truck.

 

For the most part it'll just run uber rich and that may be less than kind to your CAT and O2 sensors. But it shouldn't hurt anything in the engine unless the leak is bad enough that it cannot throw enough fuel in to keep it rich. Sounds like a pretty gross leak by those trims though

 

considering the amount of fuel its pouring in, you'd think it would be an obvious find..

 

Yeah, I was thinking brake booster diaphragm or that weird box looking thing you V6 guys have on the backside of your intake tract.

Box thing..if your talking about what I think you are, thats on later models and is a vent from the cam cover.

It could be something with the EVAP box too as that thing has plenty of vac connections

 

Can I spray MAF cleaner or throttle body cleaner around in there? those are the things I have on hand. And I guess some WD-40.

 

As long as they're decently flammable, I know WD-40 is kinda flammable but I don't know if either of the cleaners are. Any gas station that sells diesel should have starting fluid.
