I posted this in another thread and figured I probably should have posted it here first. Hopefully someone can answer this for me.

Does OVtune help cruise control at 75-80mph? I live in KS, but my truck struggles going through the flint hills or if there’s a 20-30mph head/cross wind. I do have a 2” lift, bigger tires 285/70 and a ARE topper. I set the cruise at 77 and if the truck isn’t hunting for gears it gets stuck in 4th or 5th. Before my regear it would get stuck at 3500rpms and it would only shift if I were to go down hill. After the 4.88s it gets stuck at 2900rpms. If it does shift to 6th it doesn’t hold for long. Id like better highway drivability and it would be nice to get better than 11-13 mpg on the hwy. If I could get 17-18 mpg and it not shift erratically fighting winds or hills I would love the truck.

And Yea I could drive without cruise control and feather the pedal but I take multiple 4-8 hour trips a year. Just curious if OVtune will take care of this issue. If not I may look into a Tundra in the future.

Cruise control is a huge improvement with the tune. The tune allows you to give more throttle in those higher gears and dig deeper into each gear before it will downshift. After the tune, I am able to make it up hills in 5th that would normally require a downshift to 4th. However, with some large hills at highway speed, there is no avoiding 4th due to gearing...

I was under the impression this had to do completely with a stalling situation. From the recall:
"The V6 engine crankshaft timing rotor in the involved vehicles may have been produced with excessive anti-corrosion coating. This could cause the crankshaft position sensor to malfunction. If this occurs, the vehicle may display a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), run roughly, misfire, or in some instances, stall. A stalling condition while driving at higher speeds may increase the risk of a crash."

This is different from the falling flat on it's face while turning issue.

6” lift. 74lb 35”s. Stock auto and gearing. Running the 91 tune with 93 octane gas. Just ran from Richmond to Columbia MD for a meeting. Mix of 55mph surface roads and 65+ highways.

    Love Mat’s work.

    Falling on face while turning:
Slowing down from > 30mph transitioning to coasting or light throttle through a turn followed by increasing throttle to accelerate out of a turn. This leads to a simultaneous upshift and torque converter lock that puts you in you 3rd gear at 20mph and next thing you know, the engine is lugging at 1200rpm. The downshift threshold is too high so as you're increasing throttle to try to accelerate the truck abruptly downshifts and you get more noise and acceleration than you wanted and your passengers think you need to learn how to drive.

    Thanks Mat, appreciate the update.

These last few weeks have been "hard" on us addicts, since some have had the opportunity to run super smooth test files (M/T)

This right here is key folks.. you need to log the problems so Mat can see the data. If his truck doesn't do it, how the heck is he supposed to fix it?

Honestly I feel like just logging my truck every time I go for an extended drive and just sending the data to mat to see how my truck might be different than his test truck

Thanks. I’m damn pleased. I did however put the front air dam back on last night and while I don’t think it contributed to the MPG I can without a doubt say the truck tracks better with it on rather than off. Was running 80+ today in spots and it never wandered, whereas with it off it does wander and headwinds are less than fun with it off.

The 91 tune is sweet. Have about 800 miles on it now and I like it. I did find that shifting to S while at highway speeds and maintaining S5 was the sweet spot. I still see a 6-5 dance in D and I can more easily predict a 5-4 shift myself ahead of the throttle input needed to have the transmission shift itself. So yes, I manually commanded the 5-4 downshift for the better part of the drive and the experience was awesome as you can see. Cruise holds 80mph in 5th even with those heavy Ridge Grapplers.

Geez! I do not experience this, rather the opposite. My track control kicks in

Rte 301 From Richmond is 55mph with random stop lights. That’s 60 miles of the 140 miles one way today. One major town to go through. Then 60 miles of 65mph highway. At 80mph the mileage is more like 16-17mpg. At 60mph with cruise on its damn near 20mpg.

My 11 mile commute to work is 25-45mph mostly and I typically get 16mpg daily.

Driving style is a big contributor. My wife and I could drive the same route on the same day and she'd see 2mpg worse than me. She doesn’t predict or coast. She’s either on the throttle or on the brakes. No in between or feathering.

Props man. You must be one hell of a featherfoot. I drive 19 miles to Portland everyday and a good commute is 17.5 mpg with 265/75-16’s

Appreciate that feedback and information. You have persuaded me to continue with the purchase!

I'm anxious to see how the increased power/torque and shift/throttle mapping helps with towing. I have a travel trailer that I towed all of last year and everytime I did I would tell me wife "I HAVE to get a different truck next year..." well a new truck's not in the budget, and I really do like the Tacoma. It's not that it can't tow the camper, it's that it just can't tow it very well. Biggest complaint is downshifting on the hwy to maintain speed, it often has to shift to 3rd gear to maintain 65-70mph and that's like 4200rpm....
