Depends on the state you are in and how you are plated. 26,000k isn’t a magic number like many think it is once you talk non-commercial use combinations. Typically if the tow vehicle is under 10k GVR and/or used primarily for recreation, you do not need a CDL.

Federal dot law is gcvwr of 26001 needs a different license other than the class c. You can either get a CDL if you are in interstate commerce or an upgraded personal use type CDL. That is federal law that all states have to abide by not a state by state thing. Now some states do not have a separate personal use type CDL and you just get a CDL like you would of you are conducting interstate commerce. But if you are doing personal recreation you do not have to keep log books and stuff like that.

I understand that but look at the dot definition of a recreational vehilce that definition is key in the exemption. We went through this when dealing with getting a new bus for the scout troop. Weather are very cautious with how much the total weight of everything is with that because a trailer hauling gear or a truck/ car doesn't qualify as a recreational vehicle from what we were told by a lawyer. So we ended up getting equipped with stuff to keep it legal ffor a standard issued license.

I drove 17 hours straight yesterday over a total of 1100 miles. I made it home around 10pm yesterday and then spent all day working on the cage today.

I'll be finishing the cage this week, so the pics will come then. I don't have any back seats in the rig, so I can't help you with that. Though the kit is designed to work with the back seats.

I want a pic of my truck next to this monster. But, what I really want is a ride along.
