1996 2wd 5 lug 2rz-fe. I suspect master cylinder is going bad. With engine on, brakes pump up and get hard, then slowly the pedal fades to the floor. Will still stop the vehicle but want to get it fixed before taking it on the road.

What brand is best? Rockauto usually carry good master cylinders? Are rebuild kits worth the time/effort/money?

    Thanks

Acdelco is a good brand if you want after market, oem is of course best. If you have the time to rebuild the oem i would just do that

I have heard rebuilding master cylinders can often be a waste of time and can leak past the seals again if not done properly. Anyone have any first hand experience rebuilding master cylinders that they can share? Sperrunner, if could elaborate on why you would rebuild vs buying aftermarket?

I found a Cardone Select master cyl. on RockAuto. I think it was @ $60 or so. Any reason to avoid Cardone Select?

I rather just flush $60 down the toilet than install anything by Cordone or Dorman the same goes for Centric.

I'm sure it will work fine, but in the last four years a lot of aftermarket shit is batting zero in my garage

A properly rebuilt oem one with oem parts will last longer then some after market stuff. I personally would just pay oem price to buy an oem one.

 and if you like doing your own work, then rebuild the thing yourself. It's no big deal.

Huh. Ok. I just bought a Dorman steering shaft for our '05 Sienna, hopefully it turns out ok.

Yeah I cant afford OEM at this point. They want an arm and 2 legs for it from the dealer.

Thanks for the help, I havent decided yet but will keep researching and considering all options. I have been told not to rebuild but IDK. Part of me wants to just to say I have done it and to gain better understanding of the internals of a master cylinder.

Search the classifieds see if you can find a good oem one that someone is selling. Ive seen a number of part outs here and im sure ebay or craigslist will have some

Ok, I have been in touch with Gunny before, good guy. I will see what he gets for a OEM one.

I didnt think about the used route....would be a viable option but I wouldnt want to pay a lot for it. I would be leary of getting another one with the same problem.
