Not at idle but when getting up on the rpm gauge and only while in motion. Light flashes when misfires, it'll stutter and sputter as the light flashes, won't go over 3k rpm (when it starts acting up, won't go past 3k) and have to shut the truck off to get it to drive again,

And CEL stays on after the 3rd time of acting up, clear it and it does the same

Or try using OBD scanner and get the fault and maybe aside from #3 misfire that you might have other issue... Good luck! :fingerscrossed:

Maybe EVAP or faulty cam or crank sensor? A long shot bad gas.

Yeah this is in the dealers hands - good luck. I wouldn’t mess with it anymore until they can get an assessment done given the things you’ve already tried.

You are chronically misfiring. In order for a CEL to light, you have to get more than 35 misfires in a 100 revolution cycle....

I’m not even sure I wouldn’t tow it to the dealer... you could destroy your cats quickly with that kind of misfiring. Warranty SHOULD cover but on the off chance they blamed it on a mod that could be a really expensive repair alone

Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?
Has it made a difference when you drive on a start cold up without warming the truck versus more when the engine is warmed to it’s correct temp point? Meaning does it do it immediately when you drive off in the morning?

Is it intermittent or consistent as far as this problem goes?

There is 3 categories/components summarized to this:

    1)
The computer program/code that tells this cylinder to fire and signals giving the “brains” feedback (that’s how it knows to throw up an error when it doesn’t and detune the engine down to 3k RPM so that part is working right but we don’t know why the signals aren’t registering on the computer.

    2)
The signal wires/connections themselves are faulty or damaged (not sure how as I could only this move or premature corrosion at the mating points)

    3)
The spark plugs but you are ready ruled that out.

So with that said I am not mechanically competent enough to be able suggest what other mechanical/physical mechanism issues there still may be out there.

Ah, so it idles fine but only acts up under load/higher rpm. I’m no mechanic, but if you used Techstream to log what’s going on and shared that log on here, there’s gotta be someone who could interpret the data. Anyway, good luck OP!
Edit: I know the Codes were specific to a particular cylinder missfire, but that damn crank sensor is so easy to eliminate.

You have the normal injectors and the direct injectors. These motors are Otto and Atkinson cycle so they have injectors for each of If not mistaken

Exactly. I had a vehicle once, a Jeep 4.0. Always cylinder 5 misfire, never anything else. How could it be the cps I thought. But it was.

Can these trucks run hi test gas ? If so I would drop a tank and see if there are any changes.

Should be the port injectors which you swapped and the direct injectors. However the truck is suppose to clean the carbon off the direct injectors. That’s what the high pressure pump is for.
