Fording Depth?

There is a big difference.

My experience with water cresting over hood in a lifted 4th Gen 4Runner, lifted FJC and lifted 100 series, is you have to keep moving to avoid water coming into the cabin. Not sure why but it does not find its way in while you are moving. In my case, when I was stuck with 4Runner, it came in immediately. The 100 series Land Cruisers (probably all Land Cruisers and FJCs for sure) have the ECU board up in the dash. I would bet the Taco's ECU is also up in the dash. The 4th Gen 4Runner's ECU was in the kick plate by the passenger door.. Clearly, the 4th Gens were not really designed for much beyond a dirt country road.

So back to the snorkel, if you are in water up to the top of the hood, the snorkel helps by sucking air only. You will most likely cross a river okay, depending on what is at the bottom. As long as you are moving, you should be able to keep water out to of the cabin.

Depending on where you are and where you are headed, you can't always say, I won't cross if higher than my tires.. Because that might mean 2 days travel to go around.

Be safe, check the depth and what is at the bottom, strap up front and back and cross with purpose to create a front end wake.

p.s. do the diff breather if you think your going to be crossing a river a few times a year or out soloing at all where a river might need to be crossed. It is a fun mod and cant't hurt to add a little insurance.

 

This is a buddies 100 series, crossing the Delores River near Moab in the late Spring, lots of mtn run off . It is cobblestone bottom but can run pretty deep.

There is a route to crossing this like the capital letter "L"

Hold your left hand up to the photo, with your index finger just at the water's edge behind the 100 series and your thumb pointed down. That is your route. If you cut diagonal, chances are it will be too deep and you will either get stuck, or float. It is not always this deep either. In the fall it might only be up to your wheels.

 

Yes. First off if you are in a flood then the water is typically salt water, not fresh. MUCH more damaging to all the electronics. Second, if you are driving thru water properly then you should create a bow wave just in front of the bumper, so the vehicle isn't constantly in as deep as water as it would be if you go too fast or slow.

Sometimes when crossing rivers it isn't possible to create a bow wave. See the attached picture of my friend and I crossing a river up here in Alaska. I've crossed deeper, faster, and siltier rivers up here and I have been just fine, but once you get sloppy is when you will learn a lesson.

Anybody know a way to waterproof all the wire connections underbody, on frame, diffs etc....we get a lot of rain here on the Big Island Hawaii, and mud. Go thru some deep water holes and mud, just worried about the connectors when going thru it and washing it all off at home. Sometimes gotta use a pressure washer.....I know it's gotta be kinda water proof when new but down the road after warranty it could be a nightmare!

 

Put some dielectric grease on the rubber seals and even some on the contacts. You might need to clean them every now and again too

Not very. Think skinny pedal, speed, and mud that can be seen gushing out of the top of the right fender. . .

 

That's an interesting video. You can see some water coming through near the fender intake side. Doesn't seem all that deep though, I guess it's a fine line between having enough momentum and still being slow enough to not throw up so much water.
