My truck goes in friday for the inspection. All I could find is this one spot near the exhaust hanger,
    4-08-18 026.jpg

It's pretty soft in that area and I'm sure I could make it alot bigger with a hammer and punch but I will let them do it.
Don't want to be accused of tampering.

Where are you? I am getting my inspection next tuesday and the dealer said it could take 6 to 8 weeks for the frame to be delivered and it would take about 2 or 3 days for the work to be done once the parts were delivered.

Did they tell you that you can't drive it? My dealer told me it's possible I could drive until the parts in are depending on the safety of the frame.

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster! I have an 09 4 cyl access cab 5 speed 4x4 and I'm in love with it! However, I have always worked on my vehicles myself and after I bought it and crawled under I saw all the rust and did some research which lead me here. The brake line bracket and fuel line brackets are basically rust welded to the frame making it impossible to work on this truck. I took my truck to my local dealer and they put it up on the lift, however, I live in Florida (Truck spent its whole life and was purchased in Scranton, PA) and it was pouring rain that day so the service writer told me they can't inspect the frame while its wet so I'd have to bring it back. I've taken a crapload of pics to give you guys an idea of what my frame looks like, what do you guys think? Think it's a candidate for replacement? 20180412_081749.jpg

seems people are actually doing it... Taking a rusty truck from up north, and selling it down south where people don't know to check for rust.

Also, 2 of your pictures are not showing up. The only ones that show are the cross member with the vapor canister right above it, and a picture of the outside of the frame with the rocker panel and driveshaft showing.

I will say though, your truck looks a lot nastier than my '05 that got a new frame in January.
I wouldn't worry too terribly much though. You already bought the truck, so if you got 'taken' then nothing to do about it now. Also, your truck is a 2009, so you still got a couple of years to fail.

I will give one tip though, check around the area of the frame that is directly under the front passenger footwells. Specifically the passenger side. That's where they rust through like cotton candy in water.

When I was checking my truck, I was focusing on the rear frame section where trucks mostly rust out, especially the 1st gen Tacomas. The 2nd gens actually have a C-channel in the back, so it doesn't really trap salt/dirt/water, but the seems can still bulge. When I did my check, I didn't even think to look at the front, but that's where it had a 4in hole!
Here are some other frames all rusting through in the same spot
    [IMG]

Keep in mind, these frames are all less than ~13 years old. The issue is for 2005-2010 trucks, so one of the frames I have pictured could only be ~8 years old!
So reference, these pictures were taken at a dealer in the Washington, D.C. area. We get a blizzard every 2-3 years, and salt our roads 4-5 times per season. My truck was purchased and lived in Northern VA its entire life. I can't imagine what PA, NY and New England trucks look like.

20180412_082113.jpg Thanks for getting back to me so fast! Not sure why the other pictures didn't show up, I'll try to post more. I was taken a bit but to be honest it was my fault for jumping on the first truck that checked all of my must have boxes. I looked for almost a year for the exact Taco that I bought (minus the red color, not my first choice lol)

Yeah, your frame looks like it might be a good canidate for replacement. Look next to the front Cats on the inside rails of the frame like the above pictures show, that's the area the good dealerships typically check right away. My dealership poked a hole right through this area when they tested my frame. It looks like your frame has more advanced rust than mine.

Believe it or not, that area is probably the best looking part of my frame lol20180412_130353.jpg 20180412_130318.jpg

Stick your phones camera into the cab mount hole if you can. there's a large 2" hole in the frame right there that collects all the dirt, salt water and road crap. it collects on the insidee wall of the frame and rots from the inside out. my frame looked clean from the outside but they poked right through it. That’s one area I always stuck the pressure washer wand up into . Always the water ran out dirty for a few minutes if not longer !

HOLY CRAP! I never would have thought to look into that section from that angle, thanks a heap for that. I'd say that's a pretty solid candidate for a new frame lol20180412_135842.jpg

That looks like a picture of the cab mount bushing. I'm talking about the 2" hole in the frames side wall right behind the cab mount bushing.

here's a picture of the factory hole in my frame after the cab was removed from the top hole in the cab mount bracket. Notice the road dirt laying in the cab bracket and imagine how much has made it into that 2" hole. That dirt holds moisture, combine that with the heat from the caps on the other side of this frame and it's a breeding ground for rot.

My 09 was inspected and had surface rust only. The Dealer put me in a loaner sent it out for frame sandblasting & New undercoatiog. Came back with rust color dirt all over the interior. WTF !
Dealer sent it out again to be fully detailed in and out. Even the engine was spotless.
Dealer then said bring it back during the summer for another full detail and loaner.
    Happy customer.

This was the best shot I could get without going too in depth, I'm st work right now so I pulled it into my shop but I'm not trying to spend a bunch of time poking stuff only to have the dealership say that I've tampered with it knowing my luck20180412_143228.jpg
