Well I do know about Canada and we have the same issues as the US regarding the large country part. There is zero justification for our fuel prices especially considering we make our own but then sell it to the states who then sell it back to us at a profit. Oh and yes because we pay more that absolutey means yours is cheap. If both of us go buy identical Tacomas and you end up paying 5k less than me does that not mean yours was CHEAPer?

Could be driving habits? Maybe clean MAF, put in new oem spark plugs, inflate tires, etc.

well since you bring up price, i can get a full size truck without the bells and whistles for 35-40 k and get my V8 (with better mpg). So yah, not really naive.

Your "statement" doesn't mean much to toyota when you went and bought one anyway:)

The 2 guys that responded to you are saying that as long as the trucks are selling, toyota feels like the mpgs are good enough

    Calm down.

The reason why our fuel is cheaper has to deal with taxes.

It’s not black magic making us more privileged.

You are on a Tacoma forum. Those people who feel the need to drive big vehicles don’t buy Tacomas.

Who' getting excited? It's not taxes that makes the difference. It's out moronic government who thinks it' a great idea to sell you our oil then sell it back to us at a profit. Same thing happens with our electricity.

Geez, this topic has been beaten to death.
Want better fuel economy? Get the 4 cylinder.
Toyota designed this engine to LAST. So they make it run cooler by making the mixture rich. This 4.0 only makes 230 horsepower when other 4.0's make 330 HP. Again, to make it LAST.
It is always a tradeoff. Engine breakdowns with high power, lean mixtures for more power or fuel economy.
Long lasting with higher fuel burn and less power.
If you want better mileage, drive like there is an egg between your foot and the pedal. Take out all your crap and go empty. Put on car street tires, not over-sized off-road mudders. Never go over 65mph. Coast to a stop and don't use your brakes. Don not add any extras that add weight and wind resistance. Turn off the A/C.
What Toyota is selling is RELIABILITY. And that also gives us HIGH RESALE VALUE.
I personally don't mind the mileage. I am getting a lot of fun out of my 19mpg TRUCK.
