What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Huh, did you make it? Wanna make another sometime?

 

Haven't cought up on all responses yet, so dont hate on me if someone else responded.

Can heat up the outer portion with a propane torch and hit the inner part with some key board duster air? Turn the can upside down and the contents will spray out super cold and will shrink the metal.

Maybe this will help you get them apart.

 

How much $?

Replacement rads are sub $100 and I consider them disposable.

It is pretty, but I can't see the justification, even if you are boosted.

Help me see the light.

 

I got my new springs installed today! Went with Deaver J59 leaf packs on the rear and Toytec Boss coilovers up front. I love the way the truck handles! No more body roll while cornering, just a solid, stable, confident ride. So much better than 19 year old tired suspension, should have done this 10 years ago. By my measure, I have about 2 inches of lift above the sagging old suspension, so probably 1.5" over stock height.

Hahaha, well the fuzzies are still on these Michelins so I expect I have another 80,000 left on them.

 

Was it much of a PITA or just time consuming or both? I looked at mine today and they look toast

 

It was kinda both. But it really was not that bad though. Took my maybe six hours to complete. I just feared for my fingers the whole time the body was in the air being supported by the floor jack. Put some 2x4s between the body and frame when you lift it up.

 

420 can also be bad/clogged cats or an exhaust leak. I've had to fix all three throughout the years. Sometimes I think the truck just does it because it's in Colorado.

205 bucks shipped is what I just paid.

It's a 3 core vs a 1 core. And is an all aluminum radiator. Really the only main issue with the stock one is the plastic top and bottom which can Crack due to age or lots of offroading. Don't have to worry about that with the champion one.

Just stronger and more efficient.

FYI, get an extra gallon for this swap.

 

I'd think so, unless it's totally vertical, the shock needs to rotate as the axle goes up/down. So, perpendicular to the frame direction (through the frame).

 

if there’s one thing you should know about these 1 gen motors is
THEY don’t like to be over heated or get hot. Just one over heated situation from
it being a very hot day or towing or 4x4 or a leaking plastic tank can result in
a blown head gasket.
A blown head gasket will be hundreds to fix even thousands if the dealer does it.

Most blown head gaskets are from over heating

This radiator will be for sure a very good insurance that there will be Little to NO over heating
issues ever.

yes and no.

 

Decided to work more on SC stuff, putting on the EGR blockoff plate ended up being a bigger project than I bargained for because the studs had been over torqued at some point and the threads in the charger side were a lost cause. So I took the studs out tapped it one size up and decided to forgo the gasket that requires decent torque to work and decided to use RTV instead and torque everything less. If for some reason this doesn't work I'm just going to cheat and tap the EGR hole for a pipe plug. I'm not going to run hot exhaust gas into my charger, I can see from the last owner it just makes a gummy mess and while it doesn't affect the way the truck runs it can only make the intake hotter.

You can take the supercharger to a machine shop and have the holes fixed if needed, I had one that needed to be retapped, in Colorado if the truck came with EGR has to have it to pass smog tests. No issues as long as it’s torqued and gasket used for me
