If I were to do it all over again I’d get cement off-road with a manual transmission...even though I spend about two hours per day driving in stop/go traffic

I agree with others, tundra or 4runner if you don't need the bed.

The baby is due at the end of July. So that leaves me until the beginning of June or July at the latest to find a reliable, safe, 10+ year truck to buy. Like I said I would like a Tundra but the mpg is a killer for me. That leaves the Tacoma, and the big 3's half tons. I hate gm, F-150 I would consider with a 5.0, and I grew up a Mopar fan. I can definitely see the benefits of a bigger truck on the weekends but the mpg loss during the week might not be worth it.

For what it is worth. My wife has had five Tacoma's over the past 25 years...and she actually lets me drive them every once in a while. I have owned three Dodge Ram 1500's. These three Rams have been every bit as reliable as her Tacoma's. All of my Ram's had the Hemi V-8. I got 16-18 mpg from all of them...almost as good as the V-6 Tacoma's. I put over 100,000 miles on all three. My current 2012 Ram has 115,000 on it. If you want a full size truck, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Ram. Right now there are extremely good deals on 2018 Rams because the 2019's are on the way to dealers. As an aside, I am considering downsizing to Tacoma TRD Off Road. What is causing me to question this move? The Tacoma V-6 engine with its lack of low end torque and its funky automatic transmission. That Hemi V-8 is a great engine and the 8-speed automatic is a very good transmission.

the F150's are a really good choice and great on gas, may be my next purchase but I love my Taco...

I have had both Tundra and Tacoma. We have 3 kids. We also have a minivan so Tacoma only sees 1-2 kids here and there. If truck was going to be a primary vehicle for hauling kids around I would go full size. It's that much more comfortable. Highly dependent on how tall you are as well I suppose.

Just some info. Toyota will be offering the Toyota remote start this spring. Please don't install an aftermarket starter, it will void your warranty on the new truck.

Full size truck for kids. I'd go F 150 or wait for toyota to redesign the outdated Tundra (but you probably dont have time for that with your situation)

Tundra mileage isn’t bad. I average 17-18 combined 18 CrewMax 4x4 4.30 rear 5.7 20” Kbros. As long as you keep your foot out of it and don’t drive like an idiot it doesn’t do bad. Too many people get all excited about the V8 and hammer on it. Even when I’ve done spirited driving lowest I’ve seen is 16.1mpg

OP if you get a domestic brand, which there is nothing wrong with (mostly), then get a good warranty. With the big three you want a good warranty, preferably bumper to bumper or at least similar. Also you could do mods to get a little better gas out of the tundra, please have a great resell value, solid build quality, 4.30 rear end, and TSSP standard no need for packages, assuming you went 18 and up. IMHO
