I thought the same thing. If you read about amsoil from anyone other than amsoil...you hear a lot that they pay a lot of money to control what’s said about their products. Almost got me even when I bought this truck. Keep on reading tho and you’ll get a better picture

I also did my front and rear at 5K with amsoil severe gear. I'll stick to the 30k intervals from here though.

i don't have a picture but mine was pretty bad, although this is considered normal because the metal shards and residue is the new gears wearing in, my first change was at 49 k miles, since then I only get residue at the 30 k miles OCI.

supposedly (other than AMSOIL)oil manufactorers are to run their oil thru these tests but I've never seen results like these listed when it comes to the specs listed by them on their product data sheets, just basic VOA viscosity.

What does the owners manual say about changing diff fluid. I had a 2006 Tacoma and only changed mine once and I put 243000 miles on it before I traded it in

It’s been awhile since I looked at the manual, but if memory serves, it said to check it at 30k. I don’t remember when it said to change it.

My truck doesn't have lsd but every 75w90 oil I find claims to have lsd additive. Is it safe to use them on my off rd?

Safe to use, many fluids are LSD compatible so you don't have to add the additive. Doesn't make a difference for our diffs.

Right on, thx. And for amount, just fill it till it leaks out? The manual doesn't mention how much to put in for my specific truck #.

I think its something just over 3 qts, but basically yeah as soon as it dribbles out your good to go. I tend to fill, drive around the block and then check. Usually end up adding in a bit more. Don't use your new crush washer until after your check......

Replaced the rear with valvoline synthetic 75w90 and found some decent shavings. Didn't think of it while I was buying the oil :facepalm:but do I need to replace the front diff with 75w90 so both diffs are the same viscosity? Was going to wait awhile as I haven't used 4x4 much.

Yes. Same weight but only 1.6qt needed up front. It looked almost as bad as the rear diff. I get some wheeling or the 10mi on straight roads per month. But considering the ADD, the diff gears are whirring around in there, just the ring and pinion aren't.

Yep, there were a couple of 1/4 in ones. I'm guessing its from the break in period?

Edit: the pic shows 2 seperate strips of metal back to back.

Probably. It just seems like a big chunk to exist in the diff as is.
