What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Put the correct level of gear oil in my front diff today

 

Picked up this little piece of dynamite.
It's very small and compact.

 

Does anyone know how this would happen, since I bought the truck I've had this oil leak, and I replaced all the seals and stuff and still had the leak, I put UV dye in a couple days ago, followed the leak went up behind the trans, so today I pulled the transmission and followed it back to this divider under the intake manifold, so went into the engine bay and pulled the intake off, spilled a little coolant into the cylinders I think , but uncovered this mess .

 

WOW yeah that is way bad.

Kind of odd..should have lasted much longer than that. You beat on the rig a lot?

is that oil or coolant?

 

If that's oil its coming out from under head gasket from oil galley that feeds cylinder heads. I don't recall any oil galley plugs in that area. IMHO.

 

The coolant pipe isn't uncommon to go bad there, but if thats oil, its most likely head gaskets.. i don't remember if there's any oil galley plugs in that area..

 

It's pretty much all oil, the coolant that was in there was from when I pulled the intake out, So you guys thinking head gaskets

 

That or a cracked block I guess.

 

This isn't my truck but, what are these plugs for then?
like by the knock sensors.

 

the tube is a water pipe.

The top freeze plugs..not sure. Never tore mine down that far. Clean yours up and check em out!

 

This trucks been a pain but a really fun learning project, and especially a little bit of a money pit . I'll definitely clean it up and check everything out tomorrow. After I fix this though it will hopefully be running like brand new , practically changed everything on it. Thanks for the help guys.

 

Yeah, unfortunately the scangauge can't read much without adding in xgauge commands. And it's even worse if you have an early model first gen like me because it can't read trans temps since they don't have the sensor (or so I've been told). I do like mine for fuel mileage, speed, engine temps, voltage, and RPMs; as well as it being a small and compact way to get the info.

I'm likely the closest TW member to you so I'll take her off your hands if the cooking kills you lol.

 

the two sensors are the knock sensors. they pickup sound to detect pinging. don't go into the coolant or oil galleys.

 

If you can handle a former usmc field medic you can try lol.

 

I wouldn’t say beat on it. The truck does get used though. I was shocked when they sent that video over knowing I replaced them just this time last year with oem lbjs. Maybe I just got a bad set?

Despite removing every single interior piece in my 5-lug within reason, the carpet, seats, plastics, dashboard, etc etc and blowing out the whole thing with my air compressor at 120 PSI it still smells like a musty shed in a Louisiana swamp during the Summer.

 

Yeah, chances are your fluid levels were fine. A number of us have a front locker and have regeared and have this issue. @Squeaky Penguin @Reh5108 @jubei and myself to name a few. I first thought it was due to the air locker, but Ryan's is not an air locker. Seems like the bigger gears and locker take up a lot of space and the general working theory is with all the extra stuff in there, it's easy for it to work it's way up the breather. Ideally I want to extend the breather and install a small catch can.

 

It ain't for sissies!!
