The current 4R is near the end of it's production lifecycle, would make no sense to incorporate everything that goes with TSS only to do a full redesign of the vehicle in a couple years.

They are doing a complete redesign of the Tundra in a couple of years but it still got the TSS for 18. If they do continue the 4Runner it will be by name only. It's going to be a completely different vehicle. Call it anything you want, it won't be the 4Runner as you know it now.

You think that production numbers are the only thing that decides if a product continues? o_O

No, I don't, but the only reason you think its being discontinued is "They havent put TSS in it".

Whatever, brother, you'll see the truth eventually.

It's not the only reason. The truck has the old 1GR motor that's an EPA pig for Toyota. It still uses a 5 speed auto. It only gets 19.5 MPG highway. It's going the way the FJ did which by the way had the same motor and tranny. Toyota is going with the new global architecture and the 4Runner square peg doesn't fit the new Toyota round hole.

It's a 10 year old SUV that out sold the Sequoia 10:1 last year with a 15% increase in sales from 2016. It's more likely that the 4runner didnt get TSS because a new generation is coming and it's not worth the cost or manpower to get it working in this one.

An old 1GR and a 5sp seem like arguments for a new generation, not one that supports killing off an entire model.

The 4Runner sold more units last year than the FJ did in seven years from 2008-2014.

I agree, it's due for a refresh. Why you think that means "discontinue" and not "Introduce new generation" is beyond me.

If they continue the 4Runner it will be by name only. Toyota has decided to go the global architecture way to save money by manufacturing less components and using them over more model lines. The 4Runner will be nothing like we see today. Stick a 4Runner name plate on it doesn't make it a 4Runner.

I'm sure it will be a body on frame SUV with an SR5 trim, off-road oriented trims and family third-row seating trims, just like it has been for a while now. What do you think they are going to do? Make it a crossover? I'm gonna have to set a reminder to come back on here when the next generation is unveiled.

It's all speculation...it would be difficult to believe that a company offering a factory snorkel in 2019 would be willing to sacrifice the off road heritage of the 4runner by delivering something like a bigger rav4 with a 4runner nameplate. Not with a Ford Bronco waiting.

Perhaps instead of the eco diesel, get a 5.7.

That truck has real acceleration, plus is probably more reliable. My dads 2012 has around 170k and the only problem has been a transmission solenoid. The coil sprung rear makes for a smooth riding truck as well

Maybe. A good example of Toyota's new thinking can be seen in the new 2018 Camry. The car has nothing in common with the 2017 that it replaced. It's a completely new vehicle that follows the global architecture mindset. The new 2019 Rav4 is also a completely different vehicle then the old Rav4. You can stick whatever badge you want on it but they are still new vehicle designs. The 4Runner redesign is going to follow the same global architecture. Call it a 4Runner if you want but it's not going to be anything like we know it today.

Why would the make the 4Runner a TNGA based vehicle? The Highlander is just about the same exterior dimensions so I feel like they’d discontinue the 4Runner before making two crossovers with the same dimensions

Yet the Gen 3 tacoma is widely considered a heavy refresh of a 10+ year old design. Slap a new engine/tranny in it, update the front end and call it a new generation.

It's just progress, what does a 2018 Corvette share with one from the 1950s? It is still a 2 seat spots car just like the next Gen 4R will be body on frame.
