My opinion vastly differs from you

 

It's because kids use starting fluid to get high would be my guess...

I've had this issue before, and the first time it happened (June 2017), I ended up needing a recharge. My '10 RC 5-lug had about 75K miles on the clock at that time and I'd never had any problems with the A/C before.

I realized something was wrong when I noticed that the two left vents were blowing ice cold, but the middle right vent was blowing only cool, and the far right vent was cranking out humid outside air...

I took it to my dad's mechanic and he did a full test of the system (I saw him do this). Subsequent testing revealed that the system was in fact a bit low on R134a, but no leaks.

My guess is that 8 years of freeze/thaw cycles as a result of Pennsylvania winters caused the rubber fitting to shrink and expand, releasing refrigerant in small quantities over the years.

Today, my girlfriend and I went on a date to a car show in Jersey, and we noticed that the A/C was blowing ice cubes from the three of the four vents. The far right vent fluctuated from kinda cool to lukewarm, while the other three cranked out ice cold air.

It was in the low 80s in my area today, but it's going right back into the 40s tomorrow so I'm gonna bother with it until it gets warm for good...

What do people think is wrong?

 

Shoot some dye in it and find the leak. I’ve seen evaporator cores leak in tacomas and 4runners before. Have the mechanic put some dye in it after he recharges it. Also an electronic freon sniffer is a good tool.

 

Is the evaporator core the one that requires the dashboard to be removed?

 

Most a/c system leaks are caused buy the Schrader valve caps.

 

High or low side caps though?

 

I usually see it on the high side, but have seen a few from the low side

 

Yes and that's where mine has always leaked too :/

With how much you're losing game very that much time maybe not. Really easy to take apart a 1st gen gen dash, yours is likely not as easy.

 

But it's almost $170 to recharge it every year...

That's how much it cost last June!

 

And long to repair once they get the part?

 

That made little sense...

 

Sorry I'm in the middle of installing my supercharger and didn't read what autocorrect fucked up. I meant for how much you're losing it may not be worth the cost of labor

 

I have every intention of driving my Tacoma until it dies completely (which by my calculations probably won't be for another 420K miles if I were to drive it that long ...

I'm thinking I'm gonna have it charged and have my mechanic put dye in the refrigerant.
