Flatbed,35’s and Mainly Parked For Repairs

My issue with the Norweld trey/caonopy setup is the markup the few US dealers are adding.. Ive heard its 1/3 the cost.

Looking to diy a trey/canopy setup in the next few years. Maxed out my current build and just want more function out of it.

I have only good things to say about Uteltd. The entire process was super easy, and @1 Bored Clerk build was unbelievably helpful. Now they do offer a canopy for the tray which is awesome and the room it will give you is huge. The tray is also made by A.R.E which allows you to get parts from any A.R.E dealer in case something does get fubared. I was content with my old setup but the broken bed forced me into this route.

 

I love when fixing something gives you the opportunity to make it better than it was..


Question. Living in Ontario have you heard of or run the Swisha loop?

 

yes I have. I think you did it with wheel spinner if IRC. He has given us lots of information when we do it this year.

I may be doing it on my way back from Newfoundland....One month on the road if the gf lets me have my way.

 

Yea yup @Wheelspinner @JLink and I ran it. We plan on doing a return trip at some point as well..
Would be great to meet up or run a trip with you next time we cross the boarder.

Yeah. Essentially I don’t want the bed to break again.

As for the vehicle when it’s down, I have been very fortunate to be able to walk to work everyday. Really only drive on the weekends if that. Plus my mother has a vehicle that is only driven on the weekends that I can drive during the week. It’s a fiat though but it’s good on gas.

Chux is in NJ, therefore he needs to drive 'up' here, not down.

This is why my girlfriend is my navigator. I don’t have a very good sense of direction at alll.


As for those pelican cases the ones at Walmart are $20 for a big one. I already have 3 of them. Those you posted look good though.

 

Which Pelican cases are these, if I may ask? Sounds like a great deal.

I used aluminum to sandwhich the plastic so I could put a d ring. This allows me to properly strap them down and still be able to have access to the bin.

Thanks for the idea on strapping them down, I have unlimited number of those d-ring's as they use them at work so I can loot all I want.

I got 2 of the plano ones from Amazon last year but wanted to strap then down so I could get inside with out unstrapping them.

 

Yeah. Just some aluminum or steel or even a thick plastic to sandwhich the bin so you you don’t rip the rings out.

Nothing worst than haveing to unstrap when you need one thing. This allows you complete access and still be able to remove them if needed (compared to a drawer system that I also looked at doing). For swisha want to move the kitchen away from the sleeping area. Can unstrap and haul the kitchen tote to the cooking area.

 

Hmmm... I saw those a while back in the automotive section at Wallyworld. I may look into the big one again, although I prefer hinged.

 

Oh I agree there are way better options out there. Even being able to use the bin as a seat, table or step would be better too but for the price, availability, and weight it will work great for now hopefully.

 

Frame boxing and new shackle hangers.

Today I worked on cleaning the frame, stripping the wire back so they don’t get burned. Started to get rid of the rivets that hold the middle cross member as it will be replaced with 2x4 1/8 tube.

Bed off

Wire hanging out on the gas tank

First four rivets that hold the tire carrier/crossmember are out

Waiting on the shackle hangers to come back from powder coat.

Day 2 (done many days later)
So I was able to get one side done. Took a long time waiting for paint to dry and the bushings were a pain to get out of the leaf pack. Managed though.
Need to do the other side and then box the frame.


Day3

Figured a Monday is as good as any time to work on the truck. Started at 5pm and finished around 10pm.
All in all I was able to get the new hanger installed, clean, paint, and replace the bushings in the leaf pack. The rear crossmember is gone, but I will be fishing that later in the week.
