Windshield Replacement

I need to put a new front windshield in due to big ass rock that went through it.

Any Idea were to get one to do it yourself?

personally id have a shop do it just cause i dont know how to do it. and i want it done right. but i would check ebay if i was you.

 

I think installing a windshield is one of those things you *really* don't want to try to do yourself. I'm sure if you know exactly how to do it, and have all the right tools, it isn't that complicated, but the knowledge and tools are BIG ifs.

It's not like you'll be saving yourself that much money anyways, at least in my neck of the woods, they'll come to and install the windshield for next to nothing.

 

Thats kind of what I am seeing..... As far as a hard job, can't be, it is only glass stuck to the frame. Pop off the cover and then cut the glass from the goop that is stuck to the frame, replace goop and press windshield back...

I just wanted to know where to buy it direct, not how not to install one.

Go to a Safelight or whatever and see if you can just buy the glass. I think you'll find that you'll pay nearly as much for jsut the glass as you will for having them do it for you.

At that point- I'll take you longer then it'll take them...so just go for the replacement.

Also worth checking out your insureance- Many states require full-cost replacements for windshields if you have comp coverage.

 

Your insurance should cover the full cost of the replacement. the windshield is actually part of the "passenger safety system".

my insurance covered me when i had to replace the windshield on my old saturn.

 

Another thing, if you break it, you will need to buy another, if they break it, it's on their dime.

I hope the new glass is clear like at the rearview mirrror area. I hate that black tint there, and I will put the rear view higher. Can't see good to the right with it in the location it is in.

Called someone and they said 220 to come and install it where I work or live. Guess thats not to bad.

 

Not bad at all. I'm kinda curious to see what it'll cost around here to replace mine on my Taco. I'll inevitably get my windshield broken this winter. My last one on my 4Runner literally lasted less than 48 hours, got hit by a rock, and quickly developed a crack. Fortunately, the windshield only cost me $135, installed.

One trick that I have learned... If a crack starts up on your windshield, you can control where it goes to some degree. Just apply pressure to it with your hand, and you can direct it where to go... kinda helps keeping cracks out of your line of sight.

 

Well, I'm sure any glass place would be more than happy to sell you the glass for you to install yourself. But, having seen it done (and having seen the results of somebody trying to do it), you are way under estimating how hard it is to do yourself properly.
