New to this and want to purchase a Tacoma within the next 4 months or so.

Checked Around a Few places and went through usaa who uses trucar and they gave me this.

I unfortunately have a 2009 corolla that I’ll trade in - i also still owe $4900 on it - but they said they’d probably only give me $1000 for it based off 156,000 miles.

    Here’s what they offered me
2018 Tacoma TRD off road DCSB 4x4 MT
    Msrp: 37904
    Base MSRP: 34,485
    Factory installed options: $2384
    Freight deli: 995
    Regional: $40

    Savings off msrp: 2286
    Subtotal before dealer fees: 35,618

    Dealer documentation : 694

    Total before tax: 36,312

Any help On how to get this lower, or what exactly I’m looking at would be greatly appreciated!

Do you want a forty thousand dollar truck? Because this is how you get a forty thousand dollar upside-down truck

No matter what your otd payment per month is going to be close to $600.00 to $750.00 a month. That's a a steep payment. Can you sell the Corolla privately?

I’m working on paying it down before I’m ready to buy. My plan was to have it down to at least $2000 so that maybe i could just strike a deal with them to take it off my hands for whatever is owed left.

Wanna know how to save several thousand dollars?

    1. Drive your Corolla until it's paid off. Make double or triple payments if possible.
    2. Wait several months after that while saving a car payment every month.
    3. Boom. You just saved several thousand dollars.

Or, if you want instant gratification like so many do these days, just trade and be upside down on your loan and have to have GAP insurance and all that while worrying about living paycheck to paycheck.

    Your choice.

Welcome to the forum! This is the exact same advice I gave my two children. They waited and paid and are much better off now.

To think that after insurance and fuel it could be closer to a thousand bucks a month. They're also going to need gap insurance and if they ever got into a financial pinch and had to sell it they will not only start off upside down, but they'll be up against depreciation. My local dealer has recently sold two CPO 2017 ORDCSB in the 30k to 32k range that had nothing for miles

    Not offended at all.

Income status has changed, im just ready to get rid of the corolla (long story - but I got stuck with it)

But I appreciate all the advice. I started looking early to prepare myself when i walk into the dealer.

Plan on having he corolla paid off in the next few months.

Just wasn’t sure about the deal they gave me, and if it’s a good one, hopefully I can get another one!

Only problem is I specifically want a manual.

$2k is going to be like pissing on a forest fire. It more than likely won't even cover the tax.

I would take a breather, step back and really think about this. I get it, Tacoma fever has struck hard, but don't turn it into a six year hang over if the financials are not there.

Start hitting the internet sale department in 25 dealers closest to you. Set up a new email account and start working it.

You'd be better off paying off the $5000 on the Corolla than letting the dealer pay it off and then paying them interest on an extra $5000 for the next five years.

Yeah I was only talking about the payment for the truck, not other necessities which would take that price above my rent. I refuse to pay more for a vehicle a month than I pay for where I live.

No clue how long you've had that corolla (or your age/income for that matter), but it either it hasn't been long or you got glossed over pretty hard by them. Either way, just be ready for more money flying out of the account if you do pull the trigger. I think a lot of people bite of more than they want to chew on when buying that shiny new vehicle. Hell, I've done that to myself. TWICE. Cars have always been my family's guilty pleasure. In the end, don't be afraid to walk away if its gonna stretch you too thin.

As far as getting them lower...sounds like its a decently optioned 2018 Tacoma. Probably one of if not the best value retainers on the road, and extremely popular as well. I doubt they are itching to go lower. I would probably figure out a good monthly payment you want to be around (preferably for not more than 5 years), and tell them to work it out.

I do recommend what hiPSI said. Pay it off and drive it for a while unless there are circumstances that cause you to need the truck. I paid off my 05 TSX years back, man that was a good feeling. If it weren't for a blown head gasket at 195k miles, I would probably still have it.

All that being said, its your money.

    Sell the corolla privately.

You will get like 4k and won't be upside down on your truck.
