I noticed this at about 5,000 miles. There has been a huge difference in how smooth the truck runs. I wasnt sure if i adapted to it, or it adapted to me, but it happened regardless.

It's weird because i want to buy the OVtune, but the way it's been driving lately has put a wrench in my desire to spend money.

Pretty sure he prefers the new Ridgeline to the 3rd gen, seriously....

I should have know that jackass would be rebuked, lol.

Maybe he should pony up, Ridgeline needs the customers.

Not sure why he complains so much about the 3rd gen especially if he' not in the market to move into one or has one he doesn't like and wants to sell.

Ridgeline is the eggplant to me, not interested but no need for them to go away either.

I read an article last week about automotive paint technology, which mentioned the special properties of eggplant:

    The art of reflection

How paint jobs can make sensors and autonomous cars safer

The clue as to how to do this came in the form of an aubergine (or eggplant, as it is known in America). The aerospace division of PPG had already solved a different problem—that of keeping aircraft painted in dark colours cool—by basing the way they paint these aircraft on the dark-purple skin of aubergines.

I did a transmission flush at 80k miles. Runs great. Still shifting smoothly when it needs to.

I’m glad to see this thread. I have almost tried to argue with myself that I need an OVTune. All of the love for it seems legit. But for me, I’ve never been unhappy. Does it hold a gear a little long sometimes? Yep, does it downshift a little bit sometimes, yep. But so does the beloved 4.0 in my wife’s 4R. So did my V8 Chevy. Though it happened less, it even happened in my 2000 Taco V6. So its acceptable enough and I like it. But just like every other automatic. Sometimes I wish I had a manual. Just drive way too much to make it a DD.

Yeah it seems whatever mods you have, it just takes a few thousand miles for it to break in and the trans computer to adapt. I've been regeared, weighted, big tires, from almost day one and now at 16k miles finally running smooth as hell. At first it was a constant annoyance, clunky shifting, engine revving and gears lagging to change, now smooth as silk.

Mine is one of the smoothest shifting automatics I have ever experienced. My issue is that it's programmed the way it is from the factory and it makes the truck sluggish. Truck makes excellent power if you are aggressive with the throttle which is counter to what most people expect a truck to drive like.

My wife's Q5 has an 8-spd transmission, and it knows exactly where it needs to be all the time. But regardless, i've come to love my truck and it's odd shifting patterns and wish i drove it to work today. Happy friday, everyone.

1000 miles in and I haven't even touched the ECT button. I like how mine drives.

I have driven a lot of 4x4trucks besides Tacoma’s. I logged 100k in a 2007f150 with a4.6(it was a workhorse but it showed its age)
I have logged many miles in the new eco boost models (the new bodies don’t like oilfield terrain, they show wear in 20-30k.)
I have driven superduty diesels on the north slope.
I have owed a Jeep, an FJ cruiser several 4runners and every generation of Tacoma.
The Tacoma improved with every generation.
You want to have sudden gear shifts drive a 2002 double cab on 33x12.5s. The 4 speed. tranny and 3.4and 4.10 gears were nice on the beach and off-road, but the highway was annoying.
Even more annoying. A Jeep jk with a soft top. Wear you out on the highway. Awesome on the trail.

The Tacoma is a good light midsize truck, Toyota is going to bias programming for reliability and economy, but the skinny pedal can be pushed harder and you can get what you are looking for. It doesn’t hunt near as much as previous generations.
For those with Trd Offroads and pros, you do know that the terrain select also fiddles with throttle response? The need for a heavy foot is part of the programming. Yes you can reflash that out, or just tip into the pedal more, which doesn’t hurt anything, many drivers would call this “more precise control”.
Unless you have extreme right ankle mobility issues, this is a good thing.
