I am in the market to buy a used Tacoma for my son. I have been eyeing a 2008 4X4 and have a question on its 4X4 sytem. I ran the vin number and comes back as a 6 speed manual and I clearly see its an automatic 5 speed transmission. Additionally, I see a seperate shift next to the auto shift stick/lever. From what I have seen in other 2008 4X4's is the switch on the the dash (left of AC controls) controls the 2 to 4 wheel drive access? Dont want to a buy any modified transmission, might be recipe for problems down the line? Any help on this would be much appreciated.

You are correct that the 4x4 is actuated with a switch on the dash, and I'm unaware of any models that would have a stick next to the shifter from the factory. Sounds like it could be a few different modifications, but they are indeed modifications.

Its been modified, the 4x4 switch was eliminated, and an fj manual 4x4 shifter installed.
I personally would avoid someone else's modified truck.
