Thinking of swapping the 885s for 887s and probably will do new UCAs at the same time, who’s got some they are happy with? Any brands to avoid? @JimboAnz i think you told me some you would have gone with if you had it to do over again, JBA?

 

I like my Icons with the ball joints however if I knew about the JBA I would of gone that route most definitely! I didn't want uniballs for a majority st. driven truck and JBA wasn't on my radar Camburg makes a balljoint UCA as well but they don't have the articulation that Icon or JBA have. If you don't care about ball joint or uniball then your options are almost limitless just depends on your budget.

So I wheel but only occasionally and drive a fair bit for work. I’ve not dug into the pros/cons of ball joint vs uniball...

 

Ball joint is more like factory, uniball/heim joints originated from racing where having as rigid of a connection as possible is key. The uniballs on avg. won't last as long as ball joints and can be prone to squeaking. The dustier/dirtier uniballs get the more often they will need rebuilt. Since most of the UCAs come with poly bushings this is a mute point but all hard mount joints like a uniball are a "harsher" ride. I put harsher in quotes because it is a compromise for a tighter feel that you can feel the road better so to speak. If you are obsessed with being able to service a joint you can grease the ball joints but can't with uniballs they come pre-lubed. This is just a quick synopses of the 2. The camburg, icon, and JBA are all high angle balljoints and allow just as much flex as a uniball.

 

Thanks for summarizing that. Definitely sounds like the JBA is the right choice. According to their website I can’t run them with 255/85R16 without 4.5” of backspacing. Anybody know how much the stock OR wheels have?

 

There is much more than just backspacing for clearance like your wheel width. If you only have a 7.5" wheel which I believe is the stock OR wheel width and run 4.5" of BS then your wheels will be pulled in closer to the UCA where less BS or -offset sets the wheels outboard away from the hub. There is always the test fit and check method or you can mock something up to check to see if you need spacers or not. Tires have no affect of what rubs it's all about the wheel it's width and then BS or offset that locates the tire in relation to the truck and possible rub points.

 

All they are saying is you need to check your clearances. If you have more BS then they'll hit if you have less BS then don't worry about it they kind of made that confusing. A better way of putting it would of been you need a max. of 4.5" of BS to clear less and you are golden. Also their BS is taking into account an additional 1/2" of lip that the wheel weights hammer onto this is not an industry std and some wheels don't have those lips. Offset is based on the centerline of the wheel and IMO a much better way of doing wheels because of that lip issue I spoke of earlier and IMO more accurate (bc metric system!).

You can easily measure your BS by taking your wheel laying a straight edge across it and measure from the mounting surface to the straight edge.

 

I forgot to bitch about this last night: I took the wife to get ice cream in South End and parked in the Ferguson plumbing parking lot for maybe five minutes while we ran in to get our cones. Came back and the truck was gone. Saw the tow truck driver going down the street and chased him down (on foot, in flip flops) because my dog was in the truck. Driver was cool and dropped it for $100 cash ( had to go find an ATM). Apparently the owner of Ferguson has nothing better to do than sit in the parking lot on Saturday nights and called as soon as I parked. So fuck that guy.

They probably have a “deal” with the tow company. They have a driver stake it out and Ferguson's owner’s getting a cut of those tow fees.
