Purchased a set of 2017 4runner trail edition wheels over the weekend that had the tpms sensors in them already. I just unbolted my others and bolted these up. I tried to program the TPMS sensors to my Tacoma and cannot seem to do so. Any ideas what could be causing this. I have a 2016 TRD OF which had aluminum wheels, I figured it would be fairly straight forward.

When you say program the sensors, what did that entail. I believe you need to have the sensor ID and something like Techstream. Were you just pushing the reset button on the truck, or was this with the proper equipment and its not taking?

I was using a system that came from Snap On. The frequency on the 4runner wheels were different that what the computer was reading for a 2016 Tacoma, not sure if that could be the issue...

Just take it to a dealer. They will fix it in 15 minutes. It’s going to cost you though.

Really was wanting to avoid the dealer option as I have heard that can cost a couple hundred dollars...

I do not know if the TPMS are different for the Tacoma and 4Runner, but it may be worth a shot to try a local Discount Tire. They should be able to scan the TPMS and then connect to you OBD-II port. Probably a cheaper option than the dealer.

I am curious if the Tacoma spare sensor could be throwing things off. I am sure someone has to have some insight. I will try a local shop on the way home and see what they say

I do not think that the spare has a sensor in it.

The spare doesn't have a sensor. Only the early second gens did (not sure which year they stopped)

That maybe my problem. I was trying to read a spare sensor and it wouldn't read!

2008 or 2009 was the last time the Tacoma had a Sensor on the Spare.

Another problem has occurred. I was able to get the light turned out, however the pressures are not reading on my info system.

The pressures will show up after driving around for awhile. Need to put some miles on them.

Ok I wasn't able to do so on lunch. I will when I leave work. Do I need to hit the reset button?

I did not have to hit a reset button when I got my new wheels/tires and TPMS put on last week. I just drove it, and then the pressures appeared. It may take 10 miles or so. I do not think that there is any set mileage when they will show up.

Spare sensors ended during the 2009 model year. So some '09's do, some don't.

    But '10+ do not.
