Need advice, get smaller tires or re gear to 4.88

i LEASE a 2017 DC AT with only 4000 miles, Most likely going to buy out right. Only mods i have is URD spec u cat back, have stock suspension with 2" spacer in front and 1" block in rear currently sitting on 285/75r17 roughly 34s. the pickup/acceleration is just terrible feels so sluggish. ive been on the beach multiple times with etc on and in s1 or s2 depending on my speed and i feel like it falls on its ass unless you floor it. i really would like to keep the tires and just re gear to the 4.88s but i dont wanna void any warranty only 7 months into the truck so i feel like going with smaller tires would be better idea. was thinking on going with a 265/70r17 for now and if i still decide to buy the truck at the end of lease do the re gear and slap on bigger tires again. found a set for just over 500$ and think i could sell my used tires for 400$

what do you'll think

 

Do you NEED 34's? That's a lot of tire. Yeah, I'd go 32's in your situation.

 

no i dont unfortunately the most off roading i do around here is beaches in summer and the occasional foot of snow in winter

 

Modding a lease for the win!

1. Figure out if keeping it, first.

“Yes” - 4.88s, check!
“No” - down size to 32s.

Also, might wanna fix the reverse rake your truck has going on.

 

lol 4k miles and i know thats why im hesitant to spend the 2500 on gears or 600$ on tires and sell the stock ones to get some money back

as of now yes but who knows what will be out in 2020 maybe raptor ranger
and i think its only in that pic normally it looks pretty even

just never know what will come out in 3 years and i have the option to switch. also do you know alloy tpms will work with my aluminum wheels? i think so right just not steel wheels?

 

Just depends on if you're going to keep it after the lease or not! Your options (in my opinion) are:

1. Keep it after lease, keep your tire set up fork out the cash for 4.88's, more of an investment if anything for a tacoma. This would be more reasonable if you wheeled harder/more often.

2. Don't keep it after lease, sell bigger tires and get a smaller 32 that's a more aggressive tread pattern (MT) to keep the warranty and power.

Also if you're not wheeling heavily (whether you keep it or not) and just hit the beach here and there I'd do the cheaper route with a more aggressive smaller tire. I have 33's with 16 inch wheels and am really happy with it.Highly recommend falken AT3 or their newer MT.

I'd personally get rid of the spacer lift before spending the money on gears.

 

thanks i plan on putting them in with the new tires seeing how my old ones got stolen with my old rims and tiress

Don't get a regear. Like you said yourself, you don't need that much tire, and you're not positive if you're keeping the truck. Get some aggressive 265/70r17 and call it a day.

 

only reason i got a pickup was to move my bike around but that got stolen 3 weeks after i bought the truck. if i didnt have the bike i prob would of went with the 4 runner, i like the truck alot just dont have the need for a pick up

 

I had them on a truck when I was young and stupid. They ride rough, don't perform well off road, and aren't necessarily what I feel comfortable putting on a truck worth 35k. My advice form your thread is to scrap the blocks for Bilstein 5100s and do that along with 265s. You can easily find someone to buy your big tires, 5100s are cheap, and all of this will feel muck better than what you currently have and will work well for what you're doing.

 

Odd it is that noticeably sluggish. Put the 245s back for a test, while naturally you’ll get to a regear, I’d rule out something else first. I stepped up from factory 245s through 265 and now 285s with negligible change so while some is not unexpected it is by no means “terrible”, if anything the gear hunting has ceased some.

I too prefer the nose down rake.

 

its a little rough but it was just over 100$ and gave me enough clearance to fit 34s

 

Just leave it stock ffs....

Or buy the proper lift and gears...


Nothing wrong with stock.. Get a 265/75/16... instead of the 265/70..

 

I regeared. 4.88 are 1200-1400$ then 800-1200 to install. Then another 50 to change gear oil after break in. I wish i went 265’s or 275’s ko2’s and better suspension for what i put into my 285’s. If i had to do it over again i would of put the 2500+ into an icon lift instead if regearing/larger tires

 

No such thing it’s a 17 rim. 265/70r17 is same size as 265/75r16

How do you like the truck now that it’s re geared tho? From what I’ve read it’s night a day difference. I’m fine with my suspension fits my needs if I go with the smaller tire I’m not gonna add a lift just leave it how it is
