    R. Lee Ermey, legendary Marine and one of the most memorable actors from the movie “Full Metal Jacket,” died Sunday.

Ermey passed away from complications of pneumonia, Bill Rogin, Ermey’s long-time manager, said in a statement on Twitter.

“It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (“The Gunny”) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us,“ Rogin wrote.

In a statement to Marine Corps Times, Rogin added that nobody was prepared for the “terrible loss” of Ermey.

“He has meant so much to so many people. And it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform,” Rogin said. “He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever.”

As I understand it ( forgive me if I'm wrong and do correct me ), because he was a former drill instructor in real life ( a hard one at that ), the director let him do his own thing on the fly since his experienced improvisation was far better than what they had on paper. The expressions on the other actors faces are genuine because they had no clue what he was going to say, how he was going to say it, or where he was going to take it. He rubbed some actors the wrong way while filming, but in the end they admitted that he toughened them up a bit and were better off for it.

I know several folks that have met with and talked to him and they stated that he would always stop what his was doing to say hello to fellow soldier, especially active duty. He was really a stand up guy and a straight shooter. The world needs more of that and he will be missed. RIP Gunny and I hope you have eternal peace keeping the other angels in line.

Met him at a Victory Motorcycles event about 4 years ago. I have the picture hanging on my wall at work. Hell of a nice guy; he will be missed.

I said to him that while Full Metal Jacket was always a favorite, I liked his role in "Saving Silverman" more...as a joke. He laughed and said "Hey, Jack Black can't kiss worth shit..."

    Rest easy buddy.

Had the pleasure of meeting him not long after Full Metal Jacket was released (87 or 88) at MCRD San Diego. He signed my copy of Leatherneck magazine that featured an article about the movie.
    Hell of a nice man.
