I have brought my 2017 Tacoma into the dealership now for the 4th time for wheel wobble while braking at all speeds. They have grinded down both the front rotors and the rear drums, and I continue to have an issue. They are now claiming that I have the wrong lugnuts on my TRD 4Runner wheels and that this is causing the issue. Has anyone ever had / heard of this issue before? Thanks.

Sounds like bullshit, if you have stock lug nuts you have a dealer problem not a truck problem

I know overtorquing lugs can/will do that, but not the wrong lugs. got me. sounds like a cop out to me.

Search bent axle. I'm sure that's your issue. Some 17s and 18s have it. Sounds like they're going to replace under warranty. Your dealership doesn't know yet obviously.

After 2.5k miles I replaced my stockies with TRD Pro 4Runner wheels and Discount Tire used Toyota Lugs, but not "TRD" Lugs

If you don't have the right lugs for the wheels, you can certainly have a mess.

So do those wheels take a tapered lug or a flat bottom lug?

    Which are you using?

There's at least 2 or 3 different kinds of lug nuts depending on which Toyota wheel you have.

I've always brought my vehicles to busy, large-volume Les Schwab dealers. They usually know what to do in these situations. You'll have better luck having a problem free experience there than anywhere else, in my opinion. Sure you pay more but you get the great warranty and they usually do pretty good work. I only use them for tires and wheels. .. and a cheap easy lift.

Yup, exactly. Tapered, conical, flat. These may not be the technical terms, but something like that. If they're not able to seat right because the shape, it certainly can cause variance in torque, which MAY lead to issues. But I will say back in my college days when I had no money, I just guessed on torque (READ: Hamfisted) and never had issues.

I believe the TRD lugs are tapered. Discount Tire just used regular Toyota Lugs which I believe are not tapered. My old lugs below:

If the steering wheel is wobbling it is the front brakes. If the brake pedal pulsates then it is usually the rear. Apply parking brake an see if wobble happens. The problem with machining rotors is they are already to thin and when you take material off(Turning) they heat and cool quicker causing warping. You may have a dealer issue

Warped rotors typically doesn't mean the rotors actually warp. Pulsating/shaking is caused by uneven deposits left by the brake pads after heavy braking. But I agree with you, machining rotors typically means less material, which results in rotors heating up faster, and prone to "warping" again.

While many TRD accessory wheels use a tapered cone type lug nut (and therefore require TRD or other cone-seat lug nuts), the 4Runner TRD Pro wheels use the stock shank style lug nuts. Have them check the installation instructions for those wheels (see Item #8):
