That is what I was also struggling with that if i go the cheap route with an Ebay one that when I really need it that it will leave my high and dry. That's why I would spend a little more money and go with the Smittybilt because I know that there are enough people out there who run them with no problems. I wouldn't use it enough to justify spending the money for a Warn winch.

10,000lb is perfect man, the smittybilt gen2 is killer (not just because I have one) It is the perfect size...I would highly recommend spending a little extra and upgrading to the "Synthetic rope" Way safer, easier to use, and much lighter:thumbsup:

Rule of thumb for winch sizing; add 30-50% to your vehicle's weight, that should be a minimum-safe sized winch for the vehicle. The cable/rope should be rated for 1.5-2x the pulling power of the winch.

So for a textbook example: '12 Taco, stock GVWR is 4650-5500lbs. You'd want a winch rated for at least 8000lbs, with a cable/rope rated at least 12k lbs.

You can't go too big with winches, like they say "overkill is more fun" - but your battery & charging system better be up to the task. Added weight to the vehicle should be taken into account as well. If your rig weighs 7000lbs wet, an 8000lb winch might not cut the mustard when you really need it.

9,500 is more than enough. Especially with a couple snatch blocks in your recovery bag.

    Yeah for sure

I took it apart and put better grease in it. Sounds much better now.

another excellent winch grease is Power Punch waterproof extreme pressure grease. This stuff will never squeeze out of the gears.

Smittybilt x20 10k have only used it twice and have had no problems. I change the battery in the remote when I change the ones in my smoke detectors. I do unspool it twice a year just to help keep it lubed. I also test it out before i go wheeling to make sure it will work when i need it.

I've been using Power Punch for at least 20 years. It is an excellent lubricant, and I have never found anything that stays on a gear like it does. It's like taffy, and the gear will just keep pulling it back into the teeth.

Small detour here, but when the topic addresses taking apart the winch to grease it, where are the directions found, the manufacturers website? I need to figure out how to take a warn m8000 apart for maintenance....and then put it back together!
