    Hi everyone!

I just picked up a 2018 TRD OR last week and thought I'd share some info that the sales rep passed along to me. I skimmed the Qi threads here and haven't seen anything, so I don't know if it's legitimate.

My rep told me not to use any iPhones on the Tacoma's Qi charger because it'll overcharge, overheat, and ultimately ruin the phone. I asked if he got this from his customers or Toyota, and he said the memo comes straight from Toyota. He said "Samsung only."

FWIW, he also told me the lane assist has corrective action in addition to audible warnings, which is incorrect... So I'm not sure how the rest of his information compares.

    Has anyone else heard this?

I have heard that as well, but I have tried it with my iPhone and it was ok. It does take a while for it to charge up. I use that spot now for my sunglasses holder. LOL. I have just been using one of the Apple cords connected to the USB. I am thinking about getting one of the iOttie chargers for the truck and see how well it does.

Is there a way to confirm it’s not overheating? Or you’re just gauging by touch?

That mount is cool.. I like that you can put your phone somewhere more useful to utilize GPS. I may need to get one as well.

I’ve had my IPhone X since January and haven’t had any issues. I worked for a Toyota dealer for 2 years up until January also and never heard of this “memo”.

It was just warm to the touch. I didn't want to take any chances, that is why I just use the cord that comes with the phone. I am definitely going to try the iOttie though. Probably put it in one of the cup holders in front of the Qi charging spot in the truck.

Qi is an industry standard, not specifically owned by Samsung, that many manufacturers use. Like Samsung, Apple, even Nokia have a few wireless phones, and other brands.

It just wouldn’t make sense for it to only be used on Samsung phones.

I've been using the Qi charger for my iPhone 8 for the past few months without any issues. The phone gets warm after being charged up but that wasn't surprising to me. I'm not sure why it would only be bad for Apple phones and not Samsung.

    Like, so many.
I use the Qi charger in my iPhone 8 and I’ve not had any issues. I don’t leave it on there for hours though.
The only thing I’ve heard (and this pertains to ALL wireless charging) is that over the life of the phone it’s not as good as wired charging because when a phone is connected to a charger it’s not using its battery whereas it is still using its battery when wireless charging. So wired charging sort of saves the battery.

I'll bet you the Salesman has a Samsung phone.
I've met many Salesmen who don't know what they are talking about.

Same here, I don't use the QI at all. Way to slow for my liking.

Got the iPhone X a week after it released. My phone goes on the Qi charger every time i get into my truck.

No issues. Your dealership is stupid.

I'll first say I'm not an expert on this by do understand a little electrical theory. In simplest terms a transformer works by running power through the input coil and an output coil picks up the magnetic charge and generates "new" current. To reduce or increase the voltage is a matter of how many wraps are on the input and output coils. In devices that can be inductive charged the input coil is in the charger (charging plate) and the output coil is in the device. Induction charging is very inefficient with much of the energy being loss as heat. It's the charging coil in the device that is generating most of the heat and not the battery. Good lithium-ion batteries have chips in them to detect when charging is done and cut power. I don't see how leaving the phone on the QI charger can over charge it because the battery "ignores" the power given when it's fully charged. I do see how it can become warm because the coil will always be generating a current.

Like I said I'm not an expert and someone might say I'm full of crap which I probably am.

I find that hard to believe. Your phone has a built in regulator to control the input of power to safely charge the phone. The pad and your typical socket is just a feeder. Most sales reps are idiots. Just my opinion.

Might depend on the phone. My new Samsung Note 8 charges fast on it. My old Note 4 took forever. Phones with fast wireless capabilities might charge faster on the QI

My QI will not fully charge my iphone 8. After about a half hour the QI goes into thermal protection mode (flashing LED) and stops charging. I only get about 30% charge increase. Anyone else experience this? It's not the phone, its the charger. Both will be very warm but the phone will continue to charge fine if I plug it in.

Mine has never done this. Maybe you have a faulty charger.
