Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

People already mad. Wow im actually impressed. This tacoma must really be corked up to have such a significant gain. I could see 20+ with exhaust/cai and a nice tune of the afr.

Now with the OVtune giving me about ( correct me if I'm wrong) 27hp gain, and the K&N with 17hp I have gained about 44hp and holy crap you can feel it. And I have the MBRP offroad dumped exhaust so my truck sounds pretty damn pissed off. Sets off car alarms anytime I go into a parking garage haha I love it.

 

So here’s a legitimate question...

The ECU controls engine performance, and makes adjustments based on environmental factors (airflow, humidity, temperature, etc.) to keep output within specification. So wouldn’t the benefit of a CAI be negated by the ECU working its “magic” to keep things in line based on the factory program?

Of course, a CAI and an aftermarket tune to take advantage of it would be a different animal, but just adding a CAI...not so sure. I think that’s why so many are suspect of performance gains from an intake only without an associated ECU adjustment.

 

Once OVTune does custom tunes no one will be laughing about intakes when they see the numbers.

 

I think people are thinking of ricers when it comes to CAI/high flow air filters. With a proper dynotune you can see decent/good gains

Kinda the same way a CAI works, and of course there are good ones and there are bad ones, but no matter what, everyone will always have an opinion of what's right and what's wrong.

Your stock intake is already a CAI. The ovtune is a base map of sorts, a generalized map. It doesn't take advantage of supporting mods. Your ecu learns to compensate for the new intake you put on there and you've then gained nothing. When custom tuning cones out, you can take advantage of that new intake and you'll definitely get an improvement, but until then it's almost entirely placebo.

 

A lot of people buying bolt on modifications grew up learning, when automotive technology in ECUs hadn't yet reached where we're at today. As a result, you could throw on a bolt on and get good results. That's what we were taught, because it was a thing. But now with advancements in technology comes the requirement to learn how to adapt to those changes, and how to properly take advantage of the parts you buy

I cut that charcoal filter out dude, same amount of air as a cone intake now, even sounds different. If there is any more volume of air coming from a Cone filter you aren’t going to notice it. You will notice more noise. Unless you are running a big V8 the difference is negligible.

The bigger problem is that K&N oil gunks up your O2 sensors, which you will find need replacing around 60-100k and they are $130+. My last Tacoma O2 sensors died because of my K&N intake.

 

I played with the intake on the dyno.

I don't believe these gains at all from that intake.
Also intakes such as these never really perform as good or as consistent as stock.

 

If all you are looking at is peak performance, then yeah, there's an HP gain. For me, it's not usable power. I don't daily drive my Tacoma above 3500 RPM.

How is everybody monitoring their gears while driving? Using an app or basing off rpm and speed?

The oil from any oil based filter can foul the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, but I doubt it messed up your O2 sensors. The O2 sensors are part of the exhaust system. Any oil from the filter than got into a cylinder would get burned up in combustion.
