i have aluminum horns with a clear coat, i think. i want to go dark so black or dark gray-ish. anodizing would be cool but lots of trouble so i'm thinking i'll just rattle can them.

how should i prep for painting? sand with fine grit and then go at it with a can of spray paint?

    Truth! The quality is unreal!
Oh man, I'm not too sure. It might be worth having a shop PC it just to be sure you get a good finish.

    Beautiful truck by the way.

    thank you :)

i looked into anodizing and for a small part it's a hassle and expensive. i should have got the fire horns from the start.

i have some aluminum primer so i can grind off the clear, prime, and paint. i just don't want to screw it up.

Shouldn't be bad. @txtaco87 recently painted a set, I'm not sure if he scuffed the surface or not.

You might want to lookin' at gettin' 'em blasted with something kinda gentle like walnut shell or fine glass beads. It does a really good job.

These are made out of aluminum, they'll last you a lifetime as long as you're carful with the threaded holes.
If you screw up strip the paint off and try again, they're not cheap plastic parts.

99% of any good paint job is the prep work. I am in the process of learning how to properly paint the door emblems. In my reading I am learning there is a product called a bonding agent spray. I have never heard of this before but I am going to read more about it.

This guy is going places

I don't paint also, not a painter but working in Aerospace has taught me the delicacy and importance of properly prepping any surface area in order to chem film, bond, adhere or otherwise.
google some youtube videos, ask around I'm sure you'll get good results if you break it down into smaller steps.

Yea, as a matter of fact, I just purchased a used set of emblems today from another member. I do not want to take mine off and then rush through the process getting them back on. I plan on making a serious project out of this. Multiple coats of each product and serious drying/curing times. Oddly enough, one process described soaking the emblems in liquid bleach for as long as 3 days to completely strip the chrome off. I'm willing to accept this as a viable option for removing the chrome but I have to wonder if the bleach would not make the emblems very brittle. Again, I am learning and researching and learning and researching. Right now they are plasti dipped and look great even though I rushed it. Well, rushed is a figure of speech. It took me nearly 4 hours. Drying time is the part I hate the most. This time I will spray a thin even coat and walk away. Come back when I have the time and hit them again. I will keep doing this until I have at least 5 coats. So far I think I've read it is best to do 2 coats of bonding agent, no less than 4 coats of paint, and then 2 coats of clear. I may skip the clear part because I want mine to be satin. And I will likely do 3 coats of bonding agent to be sure there is adequate coverage, then likely more than 4 coats of paint. I may even attempt some intermittent sanding between coats. I don't mind a little texture as long as it is uniform. I will not accept orange peel though.
