what does a timing chain sound like when its loose?

noise is a fluttry slap knocking sound. the noise change is volume, like louder then softer then louder then softer, comes from the front of the engine, more to the topside. not exhaust (ALL new gaskets) have swapped tensionor with spare i had from another 2rz (that one was said to have piston slap) noise is still here. is not present when at start up, get worse as engine warms. is worse at idle than uper RPMs.


any help would be SOOOOO AWSOME

i have been workin at this for a few months now.


and before anyone says it, no.. im not just going to live with the noise. either i can fix it or i sell it.

 

hey COMAtized99, were you able to track it down? I'm in the midst of diagnosing the same symptoms. My taco has 192k and your description is exactly what I'm hearing. I hear mine at a certain range of RPMs only when warm (like idle up to around 2000rpm maybe - (no tach)).

So, curious what you found if you looked & what came next for you.

 

I had a car that did exactly what you and comatized99 are describing.
I had to replace a head gasket and intake manifold gasket and my dad fixed the valve seals. Once all that was done, the noise stopped.
It started a few months later when the coolant and oil started swapping places again.

Do by any chance have to refill your oil, or coolant, have oil in the water or water in the oil? when the noise happens, can you feel a slight power decrease when accelerating?

 

At this point, there's no water/oil mixing for me *knock-knock*. As for power loss, this truck has already lost it. I don't notice a power falloff during acceleration, however.

It is my strong suspicion that the timing chain is rattling against something due to a faulty guide, faulty tensioner, or overly-loose timing chain.

Unfortunately, I'm way too inexperienced to tackle a timing belt R/R (rated as a 12 hour repair), so I'm sort of chewing on what to do next... I did read about a method to replace the timing chain without tearing everything apart... it wasn't clear which motor that was... Also, I suspect the tensioner or guide is the real issue...

 

yea man i havnt figured it out yet. although i do think it is timing related, i did notice that when i am taking off and going threw 2nd and maybe 3rd, it feels like the engine looses some power, but i just noticed it. ill check to see if it mixing
