Hey guys! I am on the fence between going with either the Wildpeaks or St Maxx's.

Here's what I have broken it down to.
-Cooper ST Maxx's in 255/80/17 are $860 for 4 from America's tire (Lowest price match possible). They weigh 58lbs each, and are a 10ply E rated tire.

-Falken Wildkpeak in p285/70/17 are $700 for 4 from a local shop, weighing 50lbs each. Less sidewall strength and just a tad bit smaller.

Will the weight of the Cooper's cause it to be the same MPG as the Wildpeaks?

Which one would you pick and why? Please post and give feedback - Making my decision tomorrow on which tires I'm buying. Thank you! Here's a pic of my truck for reading. IMG_4637.jpg

Falkens for sure. The coopers have way too many probs with balancing and wear issues documented on this site.

This is an apples to oranges comparison. The St maxx is an extremely tough, heavy, hybrid MT/AT tire; while the P rated falken is not when compared to the st maxx. The st maxx's will get worse mpg even though it is a thinner width due to its' weight and tread design. With that said, what do you want from the tires? I love my ST maxx's, they've been the best tires i've owned and never had balancing issues. The road noise is very little as well. If you were comparing the LT rated falken's it would be a better comparison. The falken's have a 2 ply sidewall but are going to have a little bit better manners on the street and slightly better mpg.

Maxx are an amazing tire. Their offroad traction is absolutely phenomenal.

Wouldn’t the ST Maxx get better MPG being thinner?

This is what I keep hearing. It’s just a bit over $1000 for a set of 5, vs. $720 for a set of 5 Falkens.

That extra $280 can buy me your transfer plate skid lol.

Here it is a little cheaper for you, since they have free shipping. Discount tire and americas tire are the same thing.

    https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/cooper-discoverer-st-maxx/p/19369

If you buy the tires online from DTD and bring them to americas tire, you can pay for the certificates in store, and then get free mounting and balancing. That's what I did when I bought tires a few years ago.

I have had my ST Maxx for about 25k miles now and they are great. I have used them in sand, snow, mud, dirt, river beds and crossings and they perform great, I was very surprised that they have lasted this long being a hybrid. I rotate my religiously though every 3k miles.

I’m actually getting them for $173 a piece.

Which certificates are you talking about?

I'm confused then. In the OP you say you can get four Maxx for $860 which is $215 a tire.

The certificates are the road hazard certificates. That way if you get a flat, they'll replace it.

They add all the dumb mounting/balancing costs. I was trying to figure out what you meant about free mounting & balancing.

In theory, yes. But the tread is MUCH more aggressive than the falkens, and really not that much thinner of tread. Then factor in the weight difference.. = worse mpg. Like i said, i love my ST maxx's and will have a hard time straying away from them the next time i buy tires. IMO i would buy the ST Maxx's in that 255 and i guarantee you'll be happy.

    Stock for. Ow
Big fan of the st maxx’s. I had a set on my xterra, that set had 45k on them when I traded the truck. And would’ve gotten at least another 20k out of them. These things wear like iron. But like mentioned above that was a 3k rotation schedule. Got a set on my Tacoma with 12k on them and they still loom brand new.

They are some heavy s.o.b’s though.

    Both sets were 265/75/16s

Thanks for the input. It’s between the E load Falkens and E load St Maxx’s. Both are heavy as hell

WELL...I’m going with these St Maxx’s.

$854 for 4, then found 2 used ones for $200. Should Have enough tire for 2-3 years.
