As has been stated, vehicles are designed to absorb energy to keep it away from the people in it. Sucks he will be without the truck for a bit, but atleast he is alive to complain about it. My issue would be with the insurance companies, and the amount of value the truck will lose.

Dang, that really sucks. I hope that the other insurance company is paying for the full cost of a comparable rental and that they've got to be pissed that their having to fork over so much? Others have reported that the frame replacement alone is between 15-20k. Let us know how the insurance shakes out from the other driver.

Bingo. The OP's buddy needs to fight to recover the loss of value as well, probably in cash. Since this is literally a brand new vehicle, that should be fairly easy to figure out. The other guy's insurance is likely going to fight this aspect though, but it's legitimate since one of the reasons of buying a Taco is that they hold their resale SO well. Now this one is gimped right out of the gate.

I know the struggle of that, got rear ended by an explorer (who tried to run) but their car got totalled since my hitch went through the radiator and pushed some pullies against the block. Did over 2500 in damage which is enough to ruin the resale value on the truck. BUT the repair shop did excellent work and can't even tell it happened in the first place

Unfortunately a carfax will still ruin the resell value.

I got rear ended on January 1st by a South Dakotan in an older Subaru Outback at 40 mph (he stated at the scene that he was trying to accelerate up to 55 mph and didn't see that the lane he was merging in to was completely stopped). Only damage was to rear bumper mounts and hitch. Took three days to fix. Obviously no frame damage. Outback was trashed. Given the year and condition after the accident, I'd say it was totalled. Tacoma - 1, Outback - 0.

Apologies for no pics of the Outback.

This is what I would expect given the damage to the offending vehicle. The other insurance is covering it. But like most have said, it will reduce the value. I wish they had totaled it.

Get a third party inspection report.
    Provide comparable value
Make a claim citing state law in writing.
    Get denied.
Write 1 more letter, citing insurance commissioner.
    Get low ball value.
    Return check.
    Write final letter, Get paid.

Am I the only one noticing that no air bags are littering the passenger compartment of the rear ending vehicle?

Also, that bird shit should be cleaned up before that thing sits around for two months waiting on a frame.

Nothing happened in the cabin. These vehicles know when to deploy them. If they deploy for everything, it would create total loss for vehicles otherwise salvageable. The only time to question it is if the passengers are severely injured when it should’ve gone off and didn’t. It takes a lot to deploy them, and to potentially get injured. They have crumple zones for a reason.

This is absolutely true. Also, airbags are not fluffy pillows. They can really hurt a person when they deploy, but it will save your life when you hit the bag instead of a nice hard steering wheel/ dash board/ A pillar.
