Does your dealer order stupid stuff like this on Tacomas?

Plenty of profit margin for the dealership selling at invoice. You can also get port added options at invoice which are usually better quality than local dealer added options. Stay away from the overpriced low quality "Dealer" window tinting.

My truck came through Gulf States and had a big pile of that stuff on the sticker, none of which I ended up paying for.

edit: I take it back. I think I paid $200 for window tint, 'cause hell that's reasonable anyway.

Dang my SET dealership must be one of the better ones in the region then. I told the salesman what options i wanted and how much I was willing to pay. about 6 weeks later he called and said my truck was gonna be delivered that week. I got to the dealership and watched them unload my truck off the big truck and pull it around back to take the plastic off and detail it while i did the paperwork. Don't remember what the cost of the truck vs dealer add ons was since I brought a check from the credit union directly to them. a few days later I got a call that i had left some stuff at the dealership it was the tacoma all weather floor mats.

Agreed. But it's a little harder to figure out what their hold back is and what points they are getting on financing (if you go through them.) So I typically start at invoice and see how much I can get below that. Plus, if there is a trade, I make sure I know what ACV is on the trade before heading in to eliminate the shell game on the deal sheet ("Oh look we are giving you $20k for your car that is only worth $15k but are holding at sticker on the new one.") Let's face it, they aren't going to lose money on the deal. They don't stay in business that way. You just have to know that they've got many ways to add margin on the deal and what they are.

    Like, so many.
I ordered the truck with exactly what I wanted and nothing I didn’t. I had a wait a couple of weeks, but worth it.

GST and SET are big multi-state distributors and I believe the only ones of the type. They helped Toyota get their feet in the door back in the day. They never sold the rights to Toyota back, so they are the only regional distributor. They basically have a monopoly for Toyotas in their regions.

That being said, I don't think I had that stuff on my sticker..... I went to quite a few dealers and many did.

If you live in the Southeast go to Tennessee. There is no SET there.

Southern California dealers think everyone’s rich, they add 3-5K to limiteds thinking anyone in the market for that trim has $$$ when that trim is clearly fully loaded out the door. I mean a bed Matt is $120, floor Matt’s and doorsill protectors are another $208 and tonneau is almost mandatory on limiteds, another $650 but all these are ok with me and most, but everything else after market is a 3rd the cost! That’s why I had to buy out of state and have it shipped. What’s the point of starting negotiations only to end up at the MSRP price point of the vehicle you want? Complete BS.

I bought mine from a GST dealer and it had similar trash added. It's a method to artificially inflate the MSRP/invoice so they're already starting high when negotiating and have wiggle room to work down from while keeping margins solid---- or just to bump prices over MSRP for those that don't haggle.

I think most Joe-Schmo consumers have no idea what that stuff is, or at first glance of the line-items genuinely believe that is valued-added stuff. But to a keen eye, auto enthusiast or savvy buyer it is so painfully obviously TRASH that is hard to escape from.

I detest this stuff and hope that US consumers aren't held hostage by the dealership "system" forever.

Ah fair enough. I actually did send them an email at one point but never seriously gave them a chance. Got fed up with the other SET dealerships I had dealt with and went to Tennessee.

Totally. When I bought my truck last month, I told them I wouldn't pay the add ons. I still had to play dealer versus dealer to get the price I wanted.

You would have to be pretty stupid to pay 28k for a midsize,2wd ,4cyl tacoma,I can't even believe they have the balls to ask that much, yet alone find someone who would even think of buying it.
