Only 12K on 2017 and Check Engine and Trac Off dash lights came on randomly couple weeks ago. Took it to dealer and they said charcoal canister needed replaced, got that done drove 30 miles back home and all was good. Made a couple short trips before driving to work today and all remained good until I got in after work and started it, now lights are back on again. Going to call service again in the morning, but thought I would ask if anyone else has had this issue? Advice?
Getting irritated with it, already have 120 miles and two wasted mornings into trips to the garage for the issue and still isn't fixed.

I was told it has to do with the evap system. I never heard of it until now.

When you fill up with gas, do you stop when the pump clicks, or do you try to squeeze more in?

Not usually. Its part of the fuel system, and really the only way to get damaged is from overfilling with gas.

    Is it expensive to fix/replace?

The mechanic asked me the same thing about forcing gas. I'll pit an extra 10 or 20 cents in to round it off, but don't normally force much more than that.

You do tighten the gas cap until it clicks, right?

Yep. It was good for a couple days and lights randomly came back on when i started it after sitting all day while i was working. I needed gas on the way home so I filled it up...only til it clicked off because now I'm nervous just to pump f'n gas. Started it back up and no change lights still on.

There must be a deeper issue on your fuel/Evap system for that to happen.
So with the new canister you didn't get gas before the lights came back, correct? If so, that rules that scenario out.

That's correct, lights came on before getting gas.

I just had a CEL on my Tacoma, dealer is telling me the same thing they told you. They've ordered the part and will be installing a new charcoal canister (not the one by the fuel filler, they told me this one is down by the fuel tank).

Did you ever get your problem resolved?

Seriously, is this a problem? I always put gas till I can see it in the neck, 2" below overfill.
Not a smart ass but never had a problem.
Show me where is bad to overfill and I will stop.

    Show yourself. It’s easily found.

Your money, I think it’s over a grand to replace the charcoal filter.

Sometimes the car can throw a code for something and it fully not be a problem. The code is basically a generic code. A leak can throw the same code I believe as the charcoal canister. Could simply be the fuel cap. Did you replace it with an aftermarket locking one or anything? It takes a few drive cycles sometimes after a code is reset for it to reappear, depending on the issue. More than likely there is a leak somewhere. They will probably have to smoke the system to find out. It may be possible the new canister is defective too but the odds are pretty high. Advice is to let them handle it, it’s all under warranty

It sends evaporated fuel back to the fuel tank. It’s for emissions
