I don't think we can fairly blame either the Mexicans or the Canadians for doing what is in their best interest. We CAN blame U.S. leadership for failing to do what is in the best interest of Americans for decades. Much of the reason that auto manufacturing has dislocated north and south has less to do with labor costs than it does the costs of raw materials and parts for production, and high U.S. corporate tax rates that beg avoidance. NAFTA enabled a huge gap in this, essentially allowing China to use a back door through Canada and Mexico - dumping steel, aluminum, machine parts and thermoplastic precursors (and many other things) that enable a significant drop in production costs vs in the U.S. Add the highest corporate tax rates in the world (USA) and you end up with a recipe for a "great sucking sound" as one businessman said decades ago - money and jobs leaving the Country. I owned a Mexican-built 17 TRD OR Auto and traded it for Texas-built 17 TRD OR M/T. I am/was pleased with the build quality of each, but found the AT to be insufferable. OV Tune has fixed what little I found problematic with the MT. I'm hoping that the renegotiations of NAFTA and pressuring Chinese dumping will result in closing the loopholes that resulted in the backdoor Chinese imports through our neighbors; - ultimately resulting in a resurgence in American manufacturing using American steel and labor. Just my opinion, YMMV.

    I never mentioned reliability

    I mentioned quality

To me they are different things

All my Mazda (except the 5) has been reliable

Yes you are correct. Previously I worked in dealerships for 10 years and have been working in the automotive field since joining the workforce. I can say I’ve seen some terrible quality control come from factories. It’s one thing putting parts on a vehicle that might not be up to high quality standards. It’s another to ship vehicles with nuts, bolts, screws laying on the floor. Like another user said his door panel not installed properly. I’ve seen this multiple times. Things. It working that obviously weren’t checked before rolling off the assembly line. Things like misaligned body panels and trim pieces that were installed correctly should be caught before ever leaving. Also a scroll through all the basic functions should as well. Collectively they are a “team” and everyone plays a role and should have some responsibility. But in my eyes the persons who’s job it is to oversee the quality standards is more to blame than the union worker who only has a certain amount of time to install or build said component. And if that quality control personnel is consistently passing stuff that should go through, than its on the company because they obviously don’t have a policy in place to assure something like that isn’t happening and they haven’t done anything to uphold the standard they put in place. After all their name is the one on the product.

I don’t agree with unions protecting employees to the point they do though. One example I can give you, since I work in a town that has a GM plant and close to another GM and ford plant. My mother used to babysit 2 kids for a lady. She worked at the plant. She was an alcoholic. She had a fridge next to her bed and drank from the second she woke up to the second she passed out. She used to go into work drunk, every night. A lot of times they would walk her out. They never fired her. They ended up not knowing what to do with her so they transferred her to a Plant in Flint. Been a long time since I heard about her, but I’m pretty sure she is still employed by GM. Perhaps she’s sober now. Either way that wouldn’t fly at my plant, and maybe that’s more of the labor unions of the 90s. They are pretty strict at my plant with stuff. You get “steps” for each incident. 3 steps in a 12 month period and you’re out regardless of the union.

So a complaint against the taco is that it is pricey in top trims, yet the Ridgeline is within $800 of it in a top trim? How do they justify it not being a con on the ridgeline? So many of these publications seem to have a hard on for anything Honda or BMW (looking at you C&D).

Edit: lol at the frontier, "outdated in every way."

Well when you spend all the time in a meeting, or running production, it doesn't matter what is dreamed up in your meeting, as you never have a spare second to implement the idea. Don't worry though at the next meeting, you will get your ass chewed for not completing said dreamed up idea, then another idea gets brought up by folks that don't have a clue how production is running.

And I know what kind of bullshit companies will pull to make the sale. One that stands out, the customer wanted veg grade material used, but it was expensive so we were told to mix raw materials. After a few orders and no complaints from customer, we never used veg grade again. And this was done while the company was ISO certified so shit like that wouldn't happen.

then that company you speak of knows nothing of good manufacturing practices and the ISO registration was probably from Perry Johnson......any company worth their weight will give credence to good quality practices and product improvements....I doubt that ISO standards regarding baselined drawing and manufacturing procedures are really being followed in that company.....thats probably why you cant figure out what makes thing get better and why things dont work or fail.....you're too caught up in shipping....configuration control is important ....without it, you cant tell what happened to make things go bad and God forbid you have a customer injured or killed because of an unauthorized change in material or workmanship procedures.... and when they come asking for the manufacturing routers only to find that someone changed processes without customer approval...um.....lack of configuration control can really get expensive....i know several quality directors and VPs that went to jail because “someone told them to change” processes without proper notification.....it’s called “copy exact”....and Toyota believes in it and demands it of all their sub-suppliers....they even require it to be flowed down to 3rd and 4th tier suppliers

yep at hughes aircraft, the 3 step method was in place: verbal, written, suspension and then termination.....but, it has to be for the identical infraction.....and in 6 months, if you dont repeat that infraction, it clears and you can get off by starting all over again.....i was a manager for production there and we had a guy always going to the bathroom to sleep....one day I caught him and banged on the door to wake him up....the union charged that I was responsible for him falling down off the toilet and hitting his head.....finally they fired him because he made a threat of shooting me in the parking lot.....

Bro, we are everywhere! Hell, there's even one fella that broke into NASCAR! And yeah, he races a Toyota. How cool is that!?!

Looks like my paisanos helped a northern brother out. My Taco built in Baja has only two problems that I know of. The sun visor has fallen off it's joint twice, and the dreaded A pillar/speaker fiasco that comes and goes. Should I blame that on a machine, a human being, or Toyota?

BTW, I bleed RED WHITE and BLUE and enjoy operating my 2 stroke hot saws in historic California lumberjack jamborees. Few things are more American than ALKY. Go figure, an East L.A. born and raised Mexican American kickin' ass in America :0)
