30+ responses about the Ecoboost. The OP was only talking about the new Powerstroke.

No he didn’t. Ford does not produce a factory front locker in the F150

I'm saying I do, but really doesn't matter what anyone thinks, Buy what makes you happy. I believe the only reason toyota put new frames in the Tacoma is because of their reputation was at stake not because they were doing it for their owners. Hell if they didn't you wouldn't see any of them on the road after 7 years around here. So reliability doesn't mean a lot for toyota, and looking at the 3rd generation frame doesn't look promising.

I currently drive an F150, and it's a good truck. Better economy and power, tows better, rides better, has more room, and the ABS/traction control systems are much better than what my 2nd Gen Taco had (they aren't as intrusive and don't sound like the brake parts are enthusiastically eating each other).

But anybody who knows diesels will tell you that the Ford-built Power Strokes aren't anywhere near as reliable as the ones that International built for them. The 6.7 may prove to be an exception, but it's still new enough that only time will tell how they run at 10+ years and 500k

If you read around there are quite a few long haul guys with well over 500K on their 6.7 trucks, other than the turbo bearing issues that are now resolved the the only other failure point seems to be the SCR/DPF but that’s just EPA BS.
Hell, the 6.7 design has been out for 8 years already.

If I had to buy a new 3500 I’d get the ford for general purpose, if I was strictly towing I would get a Ram, but the 6.7 Ram isn’t near the truck around town that the ford is, owning a 2013 Ram 3500 with the 6.7 and aisin trans it isn’t quick for merging into interstates but it will tow 17K lbs like it’s nothing, we rented a 2017 f350 (essentially the same as the Ram but 4 door) and it didn’t have the torque at 1200 rpm like the Ram but on highway it towed just as well, and unloaded around town it was better.

Shrug. The 6.0 has a reputation as probably the least reliable engine in the history of American truck diesels. Head Gasket failures, EGR failures, Oil cooler failures, injection system problems, turbo sticking issues, etc. If he liked it then that's cool, but they're not thought of as a reliable motor unless you dump a lot of $$ into fixing their problems first.

On the other hand, they're relatively cheap to buy compared to other diesels of that vintage, because of that reputation. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

Long haul guys are different than DD guys, though. Running down the highway, at operating temp, at sustained speeds is probably the easiest life an engine can have. Even if they're towing, it's not as bad as stop & go, plowing, etc. And age is a big deal for vehicles, especially new ones with lots of electronics, which is why I said 10+ years.
Like I said, it may prove to be a legend in years to come, but I feel like it's too soon to make that judgement. :notsure:

Edit- It should be noted that none of these issues really are relevant to the new 3.0, since the diesels in a 3/4 or 1 ton are totally different animals than a diesel in a 1/2 ton.

Ford talk on a Tacoma forum...but here I am.

    I own a 2011 F-350 6.7L Powerstroke 4x4. Lotta lotta issues on those early gen 2011's.

Composite oil pan leaking, turbo bearings failing, turbo vane nuking, glow plugs grenading the motor, clogging EGR coolers, SCR issues, EGT sensor issues, DEF system failures (rendering the truck pretty much useless as it goes into limp mode), lotta ECU updates, and mine has $2000 worth of coolant and oil leak work done to it in the last year (at 121k). 12-13MPG as the overly complex emissions system clogs and ages isn't all that awesome either.

Not saying this will be my last Ford, but unless it's a 5.9L Cummins or Toyota 1HD-T this will be my last diesel.

Even if you're hot on the new 3.0 Powerstroke, I recommend waiting a few production years for FoMoCo to work out the bugs.

Lol. I beat the helllll out of my 6.7. Never had a single problem in 50k. Hell, I was getting 15mpg towing 15k pounds before I loaded my piles of shit on there.

My 2012 powerstroke 6.7 was dying a slow death due to being at the absolute limits of a stock block. 700+ wheel horsepower on 37s, 42lbs Of boost... yeah not the most reliable setup.

2012+ raptors have LSDs in the front.

Also, before lifting my 5.0 I was getting 18+ in my 2011 and 20+ in my 2015.
