So im looking into swapping a BE Tdi into my first gen that has an automatic in it, has anyone attempted this successfully? I am going to use the toy works kit for the hard mounting of the engine, but I would really like to keep the automatic trans if I could. Does anyone know if I could make the automatic work with the AHU motor?

Wellll, if you read my first post you'd know. I want to know how to control the trans, via a stand alone system, I have talked to Compushift in Ca and they have the CS3 computer coming out shortly. They say that with a TPS and some other simple inputs I forgot will work. Just seeing if anyone out there has tackled this before. Why? Because 35 MPG that's why. Turbos are cool, I dunno, why are boobs good? Whys the sky blue?

Dual ECU setup is easy, I've done a swap with the AHU into my VW rabbit. I just really want to retain my Toyota automatic trans...

Eh, plans to drop a 'toyota' turbo diesel was planned for me, but funds are being redirected to family issues.

If you want to go a different route and use a vw tdi its going to be an uphill battle and you need to understand that there probably is no set amt of funds to put on both these projects.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
The A340 trans wastes a lot of power doing it's job. It's the whole reason the auto 4cyl trucks are insufferable to begin with. Auto isn't a bad idea necessarily but maybe start with a different trans too. Manuals are cheap too but it doesn't sound like you're into that.

if I had done something like this, I'd ease the pain of wiring and just go 5spd/6spd manual.

I have sourced a manual trans swap locally, but like to rock crawl the truck a little bit, and the 4:10 gears with the manual trans just doesn't sound appealing when the word rock crawling comes around. I want to retain the stock t case for the moment, so that's the reason for the auto. I just feel it does better out on those technical trails, and also on the long road trips I like to take. So. With that said, do you know if the manual and automatic t-cases are the same? And the drive shaft lengths ?

From what we've discussed in a past thread, no they are not the same. 4cyl and 6cyl are also different.

That gear ratio is def not for rock climbing, I hope you can figure out the oil pan setup if you plan to drop this in a current 4x4.

If I did do the manual swap I would just keep auto ECU in the truck, remove the check engine light and wire in the clutch safety switch as well as the reverse lights, and just run a dummy light off the signal to the VWs CEL somewhere visible. I'd also use an OBD port for the VW electronic engine which makes tuning and diagnostics super easy if you have VAG COM. It sounds like I would be one of the first to get the tach working but I have no doubt I could make it work after diving into the project. But if anyone has been down this road I'd love to hear what they have to say.

The Oil pan is made of steel and easy to modify.
