Terrible MPG's on 01 Taco

I have an '01 Taco Dbl Cab 3.4 Prerunner and getting terrible MPG's Im guesstimating somewhere in the 10-12 range. I have done a couple of mods to help out but see no improvement. The mods are as follow: AEM Dry Brute force intake, free flow Magnaflow cats, URD 02 Sim, Flowmaster 50 series muffler. On the negatives i do have Fabtech 2 inch lift and am running 15x10's on 32x11.50 BFG's. Any suggestions as to what I can do to improve my MPG's? Oh, it has 96000 miles on the odo.

 

here are a few things you can try and see if they help: new fuel filter, clean the throttle body, seafoam the motor, new spark plugs and wires, and make sure they air pressure in the tires is adjusted accordingly. all these will benefit you in geting some mileage back.

 

dont forget oxygen sensors...those things can really suck the gas without effecting the engine light.... also hate to say it but your wheel/tire combo is probable not helping...10" wide rims are generally heavy..even aluminum ones..and a 11.50 offroad tire has alot of rolling resistance... a 33x10.50 or so on 15x8 wheel would help probably if you choose a closer to stock tread pattern

 

This may be a long shot (hopefully it is for your sake), but my MPG went way down (~21 to ~16) when my tranny went. The mileage slowly decreased over months until one day braking hard into and then accelerating out of a turn the AT didn't shift.

I have an '01 3.4L DC SR5 and it went at about 145k mi. Not sure if it's possible, but maybe do a transmission diagnostic?

 

Yeah something is wrong there-mine gets around 20-22 hwy-of course I have no lift or bigger tires either

 

Definately a problem there. Good suggestions so far as well. The only thing I've heard that I personally wouldn't do, is Seafoam the engine. With 96000 miles on the motor, Seafoam could potentially cause more problems by flushing out residue that actually helps seal up the engine. Get some other opinions on that, as I am no proffessional.

 

i agree about the seafoam part with high mileage as far as not adding it to the oil, but if you add it thru the brake booster line, which was what i was getting at, it will clean all the carbon deposits from the intake manifold and all............its not gonna hurt the motor this way.

 

You're right, Will, thanks for clarifying. Yeah, Seafoam is good stuff, just don't add it to the oil of a high mileage engine.

 

yeah, if you do add it to the oil and the motor has some high miles on it......you take a chance on cleaning the seals too good and causing a leak(s), may not happen all the time, but why take the chance anyway.

well I certainly know how to kill the gas MPG on a toyota..stick a chevy motor in lol..

 

I guess I'm a gambler because I Seafoamed my 01 at 160k. That was over a month ago and so far no leaks Didn't notice any difference though. Maybe +1 MPG.

 

Will the fuel filter really make a significant difference? What is the replacement interval on it? With 123k, should I look at changing mine? I have an '01 also, but thankfully don't get that bad of mileage. You can see my average as well as single fuel-ups below.

 

Old thread, but cleaning the MAF sensor could help. It restored a bunch of power and a little gas mileage to my truck when I did it.
