trying to figure out wtf was going on with this trailer wiring is boggling my mind and its only like, 6 or 7 wires (the po never had brakes either). Used a 6 (trailer) to 7 pin adapter on one truck (newer assuming factory wire install), no brakes but lights all work (all 3 functions), then i plug it into another truck's 7 pin (older, possibly aftermarket wiring install) and the brakes get full power and lock up. So I cut the blue wire for trailer brake power on the trailer and the brakes free. So that at least tells me they work. Then I dissect the wiring harness, and the blue brake controller output wire is plugged into a white trailer brake wire, and also has a spliced end grounded to the trailer frame. Im assuming this ground is bad since I cut the brake wire forward of this splice, in other words i cut the blue wire and further down the trailer there was still a splice with a ground leading to the trailer frame. The brown, other trailer brake wire (only 2 wires for the 4 brakes, magnetic brakes are not polarized so they can go either way) is attacched to a black wire...which if done properly is the 12v accessory power. The 12v power wire should be the center pin, but sometimes the trailer brake and 12v power wire have switched positions on 6 way pins, ideally never on 7 pins, so if it worked with one truck and not the other im not sure if that matters.

The best part, there was no ground going through the trailer harness. Only that one spliced end going to the trailer frame (still unsure on connection quality there). In the ground wire's place was the black 12v accessory wire.

SO, my theory, and from looking at the one pic I have of the old 6 pin harness and the black 12v power wire is where the ground wire should be. So on the newer truck when i plugged in the connector the blue brake output from the truck went to the trailer and never grounded and activated the brakes, also assuming on this truck there is no accessory power since they never locked up. And on the older truck im thinking there was accessory power since the brakes stayed locked up until I unplugged the harness, or cut the blue brake line which could have been acting as a ground back into the truck. I guess i dont know the states of either of the tow trucks except that one was much older and i would trust the wiring less, and one was much newer so i can only assume it was done cleanly

The older truck's controller could have been malfunctioning and sending a constant signal, but that doeset really explain why on the newer truck when I tried to apply trailer brakes they didnt work. I think its more likley the older trucks brake controller wasnt doing anything at all, just grounding the trailer to the frame

I think for a time Ford and chevys were wired differently for trailers. It caused what you are describing for the brakes to lock up. Weird they wouldn't just try and make it the same

no chance for us. Nothing opens until june in the pyors and big horns.

Still nice though. Probably hike to Mystic lake soon even. Rivers aren't swollen here yet. Rising. But not raging. We are bracing for some serious run off this year.
