I've used a pad a few times in hammocks, didn't like trying to stay lined up with it. Made an under quilt and started using my hammock much more often.

Just a bunch of old crap
Took the new Altaplex out on the AZ Trail passage 29 by Mormon Lake this weekend and it did great. Taller walls made for better head and foot clearance while sleeping, and more room to sit up. I like the slightly wider footprint, too. More room to spread out gear inside. I'm happy with it.

    I don’t get the the under/over quilt.
Why not just use a sleeping bag?
Is it more packable or breathable or what?

    Restriction of motion for some.
Compressing the bag under ones body weight reduces its insulating properties.
When off the ground it makes a difference.

Okay that compression part makes sense. I’ve definitely noticed that.
I feel if you’re in a hammock, your motion is already limited

Like a cocoon. Down under + down over = Down all around.
I use a bridge hammock. So much better.

Yea I’ve known a lot of folks that use them. I’ve nwver fully understood them. When it’s cold I sleep under the tarp on the ground. When it’s warm I’m in the hammock. Never needed a reason for an under quilt.

But if it's cold and you're sleeping on the ground, you still need insulation under you like a pad. And that's the reason people use an underquilt in cold temps while hammocking.

Yea I get that.. I use a thermarest inflatable on the ground. I just switch to the ground when the temps get below 35 for a low.

I understand it’s purpose.. I just don’t like to push my limits. Being cold and night when I’m sleeping is one of those things I just can’t do in the backcountry haha. I guess I just don’t gamble. My tent actually weighs less than my hammock setup so that’s prolly why I’m quick to switch Over too.

Yeah, my tent and pad weighs less than my hammock set up as well, but I sleep better in my hammock. Many of my trips include nights above treeline or desert terrain, so tent only on those. My usual Summer base camp for my volunteer ranger work is at 11,000 to 11,500', so if I'm lucky I can use the hammock. Most nights up there are 35-45F in July and August, so the underquilt is a requirement.

Anybody know an “effective” filter for saltwater, like ocean salt levels? Would a sawyer squeeze work? They remove sediments, but I don’t know the how it’d work.

It’s mostly for convenience when I go in log paddles or fishing, I don’t really want to lug around a couple liters.

Don’t think there is anything that would be considered packable. Anything that I’ve used would be more cumbersome than just bringing a couple of big nalgenes of water

The salt in sea water is not a particulate and will pass through any common filter. There might be some processes that use deionizing or an osmosis (check with the US Navy). How big is your ship and how deep are your pockets?

The demos look promising. It's still having trouble getting approval from NPS for use in the parks where canisters are mandatory (i.e. Yosemite). That was the last I heard though and it may have made it past their approval process by now.
