PROBLEM 2008 5 speed auto tranny

They are the ones that flushed it on 4/11 . It’s still at the dealer so I don’t know how they checked the level yet . Either way should be good right ?

No, Techstream (a software program) is not a valid method to check level. You have to use the physical method of physically checking the level.

 

I will ask them ! I hope to hell these guys at Toyota would now wtf they are doing .

 

Op. I hope your not paying these dealers too much.
Unless you’re rich I would really recommend you start working on your own stuff.
Yes you will break shit, yes you’ll get pissed off and wish you had taken it in sometimes.
But you will save tons of money and also know that it was done correctly. No one else (dealer/shop) gives a shit about your truck. If you can change lawn mower oil you can do the tranny oil.
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN OR EVEN TORQUE TO SPEC THE TRANNY DRAIN BOLT!

So where are you at? You've verified the correct oil level but are still having the problem between park and drive?

 

The dealer has had it since Thursday . They can’t figure it out . Service advisor said yes they checked fluid manually and it’s good . So I will wait for a call tomorrow . I think they are freaking out because this started after they did the flush .

 

It’s a hesitation from P to D . Count to 5 and it clunks into D . No codes being shown .Service guy said they are on the 4th tech in shop trying to figure it out .

 

I think they should take it to a reputable transmission shop and just pay for whatever the fix is . I have a feeling it might be electrical maybe . No mechanic here though

 

OK. So let me make sure I have this all in order:
1) Had code P0705 and engine would stall when engaging into D? (Or are you saying it has a delay? I ask because there is a HUGE difference between delayed engagement and engine stall)
2)Replaced shift selector sensor on transmission. Engine no longer stalls, but now has a 5 second delay shifting from P into D.
3) Brought to separate dealer and had transmission flushed. Issue remains.
4) Returned to dealer and had them verify correct fluid level. Issue remains.

Unfortunately there is a problem in getting this diagnosed correctly. The current dealer doesn't have history knowledge of the selector being replaced, do they? This kind of information is quite important as the switch itself could be defective, and that could be the root problem of everything that has happened since the switch was replaced. Is the switch a genuine Toyota part, or is it aftermarket? Was it properly installed and adjusted?

If the switch is incorrectly adjusted, then the computer will not think the shifter has been pulled out of park. This creates a variation in the electronically controlled part of the transmission. Why? Well the COMPUTER thinks it is still in Park. The floor indicator and dash indicator tell you it is in drive, and the manual valve inside the transmission is in drive. But again, COMPUTER thinks it is still in Park. So it doesn't engage the correct control solenoids.

Now I am not saying that this IS the problem. I am simply showing what COULD happen. A scan tool with transmission data would help in this situation by verifying the selector shaft sensor input. (i.e. the shift sensor you replaced) Have them look at data to be sure that the computer and the shifter itself agree on the information. That is where I would start if I was the technician working on your truck.

All of that aside, people stop bitching at the dealerships and saying they are dumb or don't know what they are doing. I've worked at Toyota and the service manual states that the filter is considered a non-servicable part. Meaning it doesn't get replaced unless the transmission has a failure that has resulted in internal, mechanical damage that would put metal into the fluid. According to TOYOTA and what THEY tell the technician to do, the pan doesn't get removed during a service or a flush. So don't get mad at the dealer or the technician because they are doing what the manufacturer tells them to do.

Thanks for the response . You are correct in your response . Had a stall issue replaced SS sensor stall went away , 2 days later delayed engagement moving selector into D . As far as the sensor I don’t know if it is OEM ? Independent mechanic replaced it but it sounds like you might be correct . Did not know of an adjustments?As far as being mad at dealer it’s just me being frustrated that they do not give me a call back and reading everything about how the pan should be dropped for a proper flush . I am by no means anywhere near being a mechanic. I’m calling my mechanic to see what brand of sensor he installed and if it was adjusted correctly .I did tell my service advisor that the sensor was replaced about 7 weeks ago . Thanks again . I will post up when this issue is corrected.

 

The wiring harness and junction boxes are like new , no moisture according to original mechanic.

 

If I knew it was going to be this complicated , switch has an adjustment and I assumed my guy would use OEM I would have brought it to Toyota to begin with . This is why I did not : my local dealer passed my frame and was going to spray it . I took it to the dealer I bought the truck from (90 miles away ,where the truck is now ) and they failed my frame. So I was not too happy with the local dealer trying to screw me out of a new frame . Especially when there are obvious holes and frame rail separation ! I have also had my vehicle serviced at my local dealer for the last 9 1/2 years .

 

Confirmed new sensor IS original equipment Toyota part . Adjustment on sensor is 1/8 of an inch left or right . Scan tool confirms gear positions are correct . Just called Dealer ,my service advisor that never called me back Saturday is off today . Service manager was off last week so when I talked to him a few minutes ago he has no idea what the deal is and has to look it up and call me back...... for fuck sake !
