Good thing people don't buy pickups to street race.

Also 2nd Gen might be faster off the line but it would eventually be overtaken by the 3rd Gen.

The power delivery is somewhat nonlinear and it really doesn't have much torque below 2500 rpm. With a manual it's pretty easy to drive around that

But I'm paying canadian currency 25-30 cents more on the dollar.Plus a lot of dealers here will not drop the price more than $1000.

2nd and 3rd gen have same 0-60 times within 0.1.
2nd gen is faster off the line than 3rd.
3rd gen catches up to equal the race at the end.
That 'catching up' is where the 18% extra hp is and why it is faster once moving than 2nd gen all day.
3rd gen passes faster than 2nd and tows faster than 2nd for that reason.
The race ended just as 3rd was to overtake 2nd. Look at 1/4 miles speeds/times.
If you want a little more neck jerk off the line get a 2nd. If you want one that passes faster, tows faster (gauntlet tow 45 seconds faster) and is overall quicker get a 3rd.

Torque matters off the line. HP matters at speed. The 1GR produces more torque at low rpms than the 2GR. That doesn’t make the 2GR a bad motor though, it just makes it feel a bit different than most other trucks on the market. Some love it, and some hate it. A lot of it will have to do with your driving style and what you want to use the truck for. When I was test driving it didn’t bother me but I wasn’t in love with it either.

No issues with my motor. The gearing is a problem but does what it needs to I guess. Test drive and get a feel for the powerband. 4000+ it will pull. Accelerates like a 4cyl under 2. 3500 is the spot for normal drive. Prepare to be well acquainted with 4th gear on the highway.

I'm not going to complain. I've got right at 9k miles on my '17 SR5 4x4 and it runs fine. The transmission doesn't bother me much, I know how to get it to downshift if I want more power. This truck will haul ass if you need it to. Towing my 2400lb A-frame camper at freeway speeds, I could easily accelerate from 60MPH to near 80MPH if I needed to pass someone. Sure, it'll downshift to 3rd, but if you need to pass, she's got it where it counts.

Early on in ownership, I drove it from Austin TX to South Padre Island, and averaged 21.7MPH, and that was with maybe 2k on the odometer... so it CAN get pretty good fuel economy in some situations.

I have never driven a 2nd gen, so I have nothing to compare it to, but overall I'm very happy with the truck and the engine is perfectly well suited for it.

My Gen 3 seems quicker all around than my previous Gen 2 and mileage runs at minimum 3-4 MPG better without even thinking about it. That's anecdotal as I've not put the stop watch on either vehicle. I drive mostly in ECT around town which is 95 % of my driving. I think it's a solid engine which should hold up long run as well as the 4.0L. I may go for a tune after I get a few more miles on the truck since just about everyone that's installed one seems to really like it.

The motor is fine, the 6 speed automatic transmission is what sucks.
