Don't know of anyone who has done it. The choice is dependent solely on your budget. If you have the money then go with the 2jz-gte. The getrag V160/161 tranny that comes with the 2jz-gte is bulletproof. The 1jz is a strong motor but comes with the R154 tranny. Its stronger than the other non turbo 2jz trannys but not by much. The alternative on a budget would be a 2JZ-GE, but your transmission choices will be limited. This is a N/A motor but has plenty of potential. The big differences from the ge-gte are oil squirters and forged internals. With a steel 2mm HG to lower the compression a GE can easily make ~450 on 12-15lbs of boost. The turbo kits for the 2JZ-GE are readily available and not HORRIBLY expensive. The 2JZ-GTE engine and tranny alone will probably set you back $10k+. Whereas 1JZ will be significantly less.

Hey man thanks for the info that was really helpful. i was gonna go with the 1JZ and a 2jz tranny because boost or no boost is gonna have enough power to make my little prerunner get up and go. but some guys at a local shop told me to go with a 2jz and tranny and no boost.
