Can anyone help me with what type of rear diff fluid my 05 Tacoma v6 2wd would take? Previous must have lost the owners manual so I don’t have it. I’m not sure if it’s the LSD or not, not sure how to tell. I think it’s just the base model prerunner. Any info is appreciated

I would like to know as well, but I presume all diffs are limited slip now days... are they not?

The early off roads(such as mine) just have open diffs with lockers

Oh of course, I should have mentioned that. I meant to say that I presume all non-offroad diffs are limited slip.

The off-road model has elocker so no need for lsd additive. I think prerunner has a lsd. Just run royal purple then you’re good either way.

I'm not sure, I've had mine changed by the dealer twice and they always add the LSD. I have a 09 Prerunner. Hopefully someone will jump in and give ya a solid answer.

Thanks for the replies, is that the same for my 05 ? So royal purple would work for either ?

Yes it has lsd additive in it so it works for lsd, open, or open with locker. It’s not the cheapest but over the last few years it has become more widely available.

Only 2005-2008 "TRD Sport" had a true mechanical limited slip that required the special fluid. The Off-Road has always had the locker, the rest just got a open diff. All but the 05-08 Sport took the same fluid. The newer 2009+ Non Off-Road (still open diff) trucks got a traction control aid to simulate a limited slip. No different fluid required.

Oh so you can put the additive in any type of diff? I thought only the lsd diff takes the additive ? Thanks again for the info

You can put it in, sure, but its just a waste and does nothing in a non mechanical LSD.

The mfg I mentioned previously only makes it 1 way so that it’s comparable with lsd. It’s not a waste of money as it’s a high quality lubricant using synthetic base oils. Yes there are other out there too. You don’t need any additive additional to how it comes. Get you diff hot from normally driving, drain old fluid completely and add fluid to the specified level.

I’m going to restate my comment about it not being a waste of money.
If you do lots for water crossings and do frequent oil changes as a result of getting moisture in your diff then by all means run a cheaper oil. It only means that your driving habits will cost you more money in the long run even using cheap oils. I’m not saying don’t drive in water- have fun with your truck that’s why we have them.

I never said buying an oil with the additive is a waste. Maybe I should clarify. Unless you have a "mechanical LSD", adding the additive (4 oz bottle) to the diff, "separately from the oil" is a waste.
