Is the Tacoma TRD Pro worth the extra $10k over a TRD Off-Road, ZR2 or Ranger?

Buying for resale, I'd buy a Tacoma, that's a no brainer. Pricing hasn't been released for the Ranger though I thought, so if you want to see what those are like just wait until they are available.

If you want to mod a vehicle, then don't get the Chevy or Ford, the Tacoma aftermarket is second only to Jeep I believe.

    Work in progress...
Can the ZR2 be had for 10K less than the TRD Pro? If so, then I would be surprised.

If all equal, then for 2 out of 3 of these - Tacoma is the right answer (OR or Pro). I only say that as "looks" are subjective. If you are strongly focused on resale and don't plan to modify too much, the Pro will serve you well if the past few years are any indicator.

old man emu, nitrocharger shocks, darkar leaf springs, bbs wheels, access tonneau cover, laufen AT 275/65/18,
Buying the diesel in the ZR2 would be a waste of the duramax, since the zr2 can only tow 5K and gets less MPG than the other trims. The diesel in the other trims can be utilized at full potential 7700# towing and better gas mileage. If buying the ZR2 then get the v6, but considering the zr2, trdor, PRO, then go drive them and see which you like and fits your needs. Its true you can save $ with the TRDOR and make it more capable than the Pro, but in the end our opinions are all subjective and you must decide for yourself. GLWPurchase OP

All I can say is test drive them and don’t just drive it around a parking lot. Take them down the highway. See if you like how the Tacoma drives or not. The new engine/transmission is iffy and some people like it and some don’t.

Had they had a ZR2 DC that cheap when I was as looking I would have gotten it over the Tacoma. I thought the Colorado drove nicer. But that’s just me.

Wait 20 years when everyone is driving electric cars, that truck will be in demand!

I’m going to agree here. These trucks aren’t looked at as collectors vehicles, but work horses, that are meant to be driven 500,000 miles and THEN SOME.

Nothing pains me more seeing people drive a Tacoma 5,000 miles or less in a year.

I’m hoping I can get half a million on this 3rd gen. I know someone probably has 150,000 miles on this 3rd gen.... where are you?

I would respectfully disagree, the Dodge Dakota was the first true Mid-Sized Truck as when it was introduced you only had a choice between Mini Trucks and Full Size, I do think that since Toyota entered the Mid-Size category that they have perfected it.

Yes, the Dakota owned the mid size market for many years.

My 97 was a true beast of a truck, drove it 19 trouble free years.

Might have bought another in 2016 when the 97 finally crapped out, but that wasn't an option.

The 3rd gen Tacoma seems to be a really SOLID truck, and almost identical proportionally to the 97 Dakota.

Nice article btw, thanks for posting it.

I thought that was a pretty cool article too, I actually remember seeing the Convertible Dakota's running around, they were quite unique.

A coworker of mine had the Dakota convertible.

It was a neat concept, but practicality wise, not so much- at least for the Northeastern region.

Jeep military (Kaiser) pickups had this feature- I see them for sale on Craigslist from time to time.

I would imagine these trucks were "real" beasts in their time.

I purchased my pro and do not regret it.
I will be swapping suspension out, as I have grown more into the hobby and some of the things I am doing require some changes.

That being said, I love my truck. If you want resale, a tacoma is amazing. A 4x4 tacoma is better. and a pro is best.

Only other option for resale would be a raptor, which if ur pulling and loading in bikes, I would consider it. Pro is gonna be a short bed and bikes on the pro suspension are gonna make it drive like trash.

    Wow. Only 1350 miles too.

That is a great price, but it also speaks loudly to your question about resale value.

That is close to $10k off new MSRP.

Between that for that price and a new TRD Pro or even OR, I'd personally go with the ZR2.

If you are planning on driving the truck for a long time, resale value is a non-issue.

If you change vehicles like some people change cell phones, then resale is a BIG consideration.

Dirtbikes fit better in a longbed and the Pro doesn't come in that configuration, you can always add Pro equivalent or better shocks to an OR longbed to meet your needs.

Not sure if the ZR2 has one either u
