Finally finished my NS Eccentric build. Never thought I’d have this much fun on a hardtail after being spoiled by full suspension lol. A0BFC8FA-66F4-40EF-9DE8-8AE65F03D5A9.jpg

Also. Anyone ever transport a bike on a wrangler tailgate with the back window open draped over like on a truck tailgate? My girlfriend bought the only wrangler on the planet without a trailer hitch :annoyed:

Well y’all may bash me or whatever but after a lot of looking and thought I finally decided to just go for this today. I think she’s a beauty. I know it’s not the high end bike shop bikes y’all recommend but I think it’s perfect for me to start out without spending too much. If it grows into a big hobby then I’ll dive in deeper later. Of course with that said I’m no young buck. I do live like a younger guy and have small kids for my age but I’m nearing the big 50 so it’s not like I’m going out to run races or be competitive at this.

Picked her up on letgo for $65 and I’m tickled to death with it. Looks nearly brand new although the rear sprockets are rusty. Schwinn Sidewinder 21 speed, shimano revo shifter/derailleur, 26” alloy wheels, steel frame, quick release front wheel and seat.

Yep, friends that work for canyons confirmed it. Regrading the slope to make a ski bunny hill...

Even the Canyons employees are trying to convince management how bad of a mistake they made.

@TacoDawgfan looks like you got an OK bike for 1/2 price which is about one tank of gas for a Tacoma. Sounds like a good deal to me. And, it appears to have Shimano and Suntour components, which are reputable companies even if low-end spec. You can pay $65 just for high end Shimano brake pads ... Have fun, wear a helmet!

Couple of questions, one is where is the cheapest place to buy a rocky mount rack or is there a better option?

Is the revo shifter a decent shifter? I did finally get to visit a bike shop this weekend. The owner went over a list of shimano shifters with me telling me that several were cheap big box store types and suggested not to get one below a particular one on the list. I can’t remember the name but thought it started with an R so therefore I thought maybe that was the revo? Wish I had thought to take a pic of the list he had.

    Yes it’s Suntour front forks/shocks.

I don’t know about places to buy Rocky Mounts , but be aware that modern bikes have a lot of different types and sizes of front axles, so make sure you get the right size mount for your 9mm QR fork. As for the shifters and derailleurs, don’t sweat it. They’ll be fine for that bike. Any upgrade would cost 2x what you paid for the bike - minimum.

Wasn’t looking to upgrade the shifter, was just wondering if that was a decent one? I read some reviews on some new bikes (big box store) where the shimano’s on them had trouble jumping and one even caused damage to the gears.

But all these shimano shifters look about the same to me so idk?

Oh and my front axel is definitely a 9mm? I guess that’s common knowledge among bikers?

One of the best places for bike stuff including racks is Competitive Cyclist, Backcountry.com, Jensen USA, CBO Bikes. Look at the Kuat - they have one that can do traditional road bike QR, thru axle, etc. And reasonable prices.

Here is that list. You got a great deal on that bike, but if you truly ride it enough to need to upgrade the components or groupset, you would be better off upgrading the whole bike. The bike will last you as long as you keep it maintained, but if you truly get off the beaten path and dive deep, you’re going to want air shocks (instead of internal metal coil), a wider gear range, stronger brakes -hydraulic disc brakes, bigger wheels. It’s the natural flow of progression, but the bike you picked up won’t be able to accept any of those upgrades.

Would it be too much to buy a yeti sb5 or an ibis mojo as a first time bike? My other thought is the reign 2. Price is an important factor (cheaper the better) but I really would want to buy a bike that has a great frame with ok components that can be replaced later rather than a bike that needs upgraded components and frame (specifically thinking heavy alloy frames). This isn't really an issue as long as I can find a light playful bike. I don't really care if its carbon. Any thoughts or suggestions?

How far up are they running? Headed there next weekend.

So dumb. In a time where their seasons are getting less snow, and bike tourism is picking up, they choose to grade a substantial investment in their bike park. Canyons has plenty of bunny slopes to choose from already.

Ours didn't have a hitch either but you can add it for under $30 and it's very easy just 4 bolts that sandwich the rear cross frame!

Short answer: no, not too much if you can afford it. Longer answer: depends on a couple of things. First, what do you mean by “first time bike”? If you’ve never ridden a mountain bike on single track, etc, that’s a big investment. You may hate it. In any case, I’d recommend demo’ing a few bikes in that category. Honestly, you may find that you don’t notice any difference between aluminum and carbon, and the dollars can go to better and very noticeable upgrades like a dropper and wider and/or lighter rims. Also, before I made a big upgrade from an 18 year old 26-er a few years ago, I demo’ed 27.5 and 29” bikes and went for 29. Glad I did. I (and my wife, who made a similar upgrade) both far preferred the 29-ers. We both got carbon frames and she stuck with the Ibis “Special Blend” build kit which is a good value, and upgraded to wide carbon rims and is very happy with them. I tried to save a few bucks and stuck with the stock, rather narrow alu rims on my Tallboy and wish I’d gone wider. I don’t miss longer travel or higher end brakes or other stuff. Finally, note what people in your area ride ... that can be a good indication of what works on local trails, and buy from the local bike shop you like best. If you’re in Northern California, I’ll give a pitch for Ibis, Specialized and Santa Cruz who do a ton to support local trail access, building and maintenance.
