I went with the OR because of the skid plates and Kevlar tires. Rocks, cactus, sand, and rough roads are why I have to have a 4x4 with Off Road capability. That’s great that your truck gets that mileage. I could get an air dam but why should I change my truck to accommodate Toyota’s miss? If I was one of a small few that was failing to achieve the mpg rating in the window sticker, that would be different, but there are way too many reporting low numbers. Complaints are high on this and other forums about the transmission, weak feeling engine, and poor mpg.

I’m not saying everyone made a bad choice with their truck and I would guess most are very happy. I hope that the people that are getting crappy mileage and that are upset speak out. Ultimately, I hope that Toyota engineers follow these forums and pay attention. I hope there is a fix, or a new powertrain option in the near future.

I also drive on the highway a lot. The aero plays a big role but I knew what I was getting into. I can get 15 going 80 in traffic with a headwind, and I can get 25 going 65 in dead air. It is what it is. And most of these full-size comparisons don't work, at least against a TRD OR, because even a Z71 now has car tires and a big air dam.

As for the power... All 278 of them are there. Push the pedal if you need to use them! It wasn't long ago that 278hp was a wild wet dream for full-size trucks. We have it good now.

Mine is pretty consistently around 14 litres per 100km. That said it's mostly city driving.

I do feel your pain, my last pickup didn't live up to the sticker mpg rating either and was stock. I felt conned. As far as I know, most pickups dont live up to the ratings under uncontrolled conditions as they are so non-aerodynamic, unless they have a lot of torque to counteract wind drag.

If mileage is a deal breaker, a pickup with a diesel engine is likely going to be a better choice there. But there are tradeoffs going that route also. A air dam and tonneau cover also help at higher speeds, but the air dam is going to get hung up on obstacles.

I average 18 mpg with 255 85s and an ome lift going 77mph in western VA. I get 21 if I stick at 64. Maybe you should try less skinny pedal.

People need to remember that the Sticker Mpg was rated under ideal conditions. Not varying terrain, hills, mountains, traffic.

    YMMV

You do realize Chevy uses cylinder shutdown to save fuel, right? So on the highway you're really driving a 4 cylinder not a v8

I did my long distance round trip today and my mileage returned to normal. I got in the neighborhood of 19 MPG which I had been getting before I switched from 93 to 89. In my case I think switching octanes threw my truck for a loop.

I've been getting 19mpg on my first 3 tanks since I got the truck. That's with, and now without the hideous air dam. All town and country driving.

I drove 30 miles today at an average speed of 40mph through back roads from my camp to home and screen said 21.6 mpg for the trip. Im good with that. go up every friday and back on sunday (or monday) all summer. seems to be even better than my 16 access cab sr5 the past 2 summers while I had it. Now I drive my 18 OR DCLB. I drive with ECT on all the time and in auto.

I stopped caring when I came to grips with my heavy right foot. The SC with a manual tranny makes it heavier.

Are you all stock, including tires? Once you get LT tires, MPG will take a hit. Lift, armor, etc. will affect that as well. But all stock, even with a MT, you should be in that range going 65mph. Do note that winter blend gas and colder weather will affect MPG. Try it during the warmer season. We're (finally) in the 60's and I regularly see 23MPG on the freeway (~70MPH avg). Using 85 octane gas, too.

When I got my truck it averaged around 20 mpgs. Now though it has 32" 10ply tires and a few other mods the average is around 17 mpgs , but I also drive 100 miles a day in mixed terrain and roadways. I have noticed though that my truck does seem to do better with premium gas but im unsure as to why.

I have over 45K miles on my TRD OR DCSB and have tracked mileage pretty closely the whole time. I have had an RTT but running the last year without it. I recently installed 265/75 load range E KO2’s. Of all the changes, I feel that the trans TSB had the worst effect. And in that regard, I kinda do thing Toyota pulled a bait and switch ... get good EPA numbers with a poorly driving truck, then fix The drivability and hurt the mpg. By the way, I did exchange our Prius for the Tacoma (and also a T100). Obviously the Taco is much thirstier than the Prius but still better than the V6 4wd T100. And I do care about mpg ... tank range, cost, and consumption of a non-renewable resource that we should all care about. I’m hoping summer gas will pull my road trip average over 21 mpg again. Overall for the past 5-6K miles on winter gas I’m sitting at 19.8. Was 20.1 before I got the KO2’s.

Just a rack and soft top in the summer and tonneau in the winter. The truck typically stays with in a 10 to 15 mile radius for work and most errands, and only sees the highway for adventures anyways.

I get an extra MPG using fuel from Shell or Chevron.
